Just as I thought sanity was about to be restored to this presidential campaign, and we could sit back and wait for the GOP convention, I almost flipped out.
Why? I just saw Lindsey Graham on television. Yep, the senator from South Carolina, who has apparently been assigned the task of spreading misinformation and rhetoric. This is a man who looks like he can't answer a direct question.
Sen. Graham appeared on George Stephanopoulos' program, and put on quite the amazing performance. When asked if he felt Gov. Palin was ready to step in and lead on day 1, the response was"more than Obama".He was then asked about her national security experience. Graham responded with "She's been a governor, she has run the (Alaska) National Guard, what has Obama done?...". I believe the question was about Palin's national security experience, not Obama. By the way, running your state's National Guard makes someone ready to tackle foreign policy and national security issues? Graham never bluntly answered the question, he waltzed around it.
When asked if he were comfortable with Palin leading the country if something were to happen to McCain, here is a quote-"I dread the day that Senator Obama is Commander in Chief...". Okay, if Sen. Graham dreads that day, he's smart enough to know that there is a underlying message of fear that he is sending. Once again, he didn't answer the question.
When asked about the smear tactics employed by the Bush campaign (Karl Rove, specifically) in 2004 against McCain, and were those same tactics used against Obama, he did not answer the question.
The interview lasted more than eight minutes, and is more extensive than what I have detailed here. My point is, the rhetoric seems to never stop, the politics of fear are alive and well, and apparently, the Republican Party is willing to pull out all the stops to insure a McCain victory. If this is the case, is there anyone in the party willing to say, "Stop, enough! Senator Graham. please shut up!" It's garbage like this that makes the political process so unpleasant. Let's see what else comes out of the Twin Cities this week. Until next time.
