While I know that we are commanded to love one another, I still have a difficult time loving all of whom I meet. I would imagine that it will take a lifetime before I will accomplish such a high calling. To be quite honest, I do not love everyone I meet. It takes a lot of work at times.

We have a person in our congregation at church that amazes me.  While (let us say he in this case) he will tell the whole group of how he loves each and every one of us from the bottom of his heart. Yet, he will turn around and say something completely negative about anything in his path.

Now going back to his first statement, "I love each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart."

Since I have seen and heard for myself this particular behavior, I now want a turn to ask questions.

"Would you PLEASE tell me what you mean by the bottom of your heart?"

"Where exactly is the bottom of your heart?"

"NO! Never mind I don't want to know." Whoa that was close!

"Could you try to love me from the top of your heart? It just sounds better."

Okay, so now that I have giggled to myself and know that we all must work on this subject matter, I will keep quiet and smile only politely. I must wipe off that impish look I often have.

I personally would be better off to reflect upon, the good Samaritan:

Jesus tells a parable about what it means to love your neighbor. A man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho is attacked by thieves who rob him and leave him for dead. A priest and a Levite both pass by. A Samaritan helps him, showing he loves his neighbor. We should do the same.

Yeah Michelle, the word love is used too loosely. One should not have to tell someone they love them. If they love you you'll know it without being told.

I think it is still nice to hear the words once and a while. How about you? I love you, Michelle! But, we must be careful of those who use the word lightly.

I love you too Mark,

It is nice to hear the words form someone when they really mean it. And yes, we must be careful of those who use it lightly.

I think that there is something very important going on here. To be honest, I have one of "those guys" at my church also, but I think that I look at him in a different way.
I suspect I spot this type of person because my father was similar. He grew up in a horrible family, and never really understood what love was. My mother tried to teach him, but he just never caught on until after he passed his 75th birthday. My "guy" has a life that appears to be miserable in every direction. I know his children want very little to do with him, his wife is so bad, you could not pay me to spend a few hours with her (though I would do it if I felt called by the Lord), his career appears to be going no where, and I know that he struggles every day.

When he says " I Love each and every one of you". I truly believe it, because I suspect that his time in church is actually the best time he will have all week and the people he knows there are the best "friends" he has.

Does he love us the way you and I love people? Probably not, but it is the best he knows how. I have found it is not hard to brighten his day, and I have learned to go the extra distance to do it. I still have not been able to get his wife to respond positively to me, but I will keep on trying.

I love you from the bottom of my heart.
Jeff

Ha! You are so funny Jeff. I love you too. Since we are speaking of the same gentleman, does that mean we will all go to our FAVORITE restaurant on Sunday?? LOL.

Hi Michelle,

Interesting article. It is sad how people don't really know how to love, know the meaning of love, and therefore has a hard time actually showing it. We know who we are speaking of, and yes it's hard to love someone that behaves that way, but as Christians we must try. Maybe one day he will wake up and actually understand what love is. Like Jeff said, his dad didn't learn to love until he passed his 75th birthday, so we know theres hope for this individual.

Yes Angie, there is still hope. I will always try, but it doesn't necessarily mean I will succeed every time.

Hi Michelle, yes--I agree this behavior can be tough. It helps when we pray that God would give us His eyes and His ears. When we see with God's eyes, we see that there is probably something going on in the heart of this person that needs a healing touch. We all end of the way we are because of the life we had growing up. Not that it is an excuse, but it is a reason and when we love with God's love, those things happen. When I get frustrated, I stop myself and ask the Lord to show me how I look to others? I am among the hard to love at times? This usually solves my problem pretty quickly. Thanks for the reminder to love with the top of our hearts :-)

Love and hugs!! Teresa

Thank Teresa,

I am often reminded of me several years ago by this person's behavior. Maybe that is why I can see what is going on. My prayers for this person are for him to be able to take true comfort in Jesus and stop looking for other circumstances to fill his heart.

I love you from somewhere in my heat :- )  LOL

That is a great prayer for all of us.  Its all too easy to focus on the wrong thing sometimes...like the song says, "lookin' for love in all the wrong places"

Top, bottom or somewhere in between, I don't care as long as you love me :-)  lol!
