Mid-Spring is the time to plant any new trees and shrubs. It is not necessary to amend the soil unless you have the rockiest or clay-like soil in the universe. Choose your trees and shrubs with care remembering to plant them in locations that will accommodate them when they have reached their maturity. Remember to water all newly planted shrubs, trees and plants every evening for at least 2 weeks until they have established ground roots and you can mulch around them also, provided you are watering them daily.

This is the time we usually start mowing and remember to set your mower blade to the height of about 3 inches. If you do not aerate your own lawn then this is the time to engage a lawn service to do it for you.

Again back to weeding. Weeding aggressively now means less weeding later, so get on it and keep on it before your weeds go to seed.

This is also the time you can divide your perennials, transplant any that need transplanting and replace any that need replacing. It is also the perfect time to add new perennials to you garden.

This is the time to round up all your garden containers, dump them out give them a good rinse out with some water with a dash of bleach and another good rise. Put pieces of old screen over the holes to keep your soil from flushing out, put about an inch or two of gravel in the bottom and refill with potting soil and add your new plants.

Has your garden gotten any gaps in the winter? If so, this is the time to put in some new plants to refresh those areas.

Do you have delphiniums, peonies and gladioli in your garden? Well get out the bamboo stakes and string for now is the time to stake them. Bamboo is much better and usually cheaper than the metal or plastic ones.

Now is the time to watch your daily rain schedule. We do not want to over water and we do not want to go too long with many days without watering. Do your watering in the evening and do it close to the roots of your plants. This is wise not only for your flowers and shrubs, but for any newly planted vegetables.

"Tread the Earth Lightly" and in the meantime… May your day be filled with…

Peace, Light and Love,
