Are you in a situation right now that has you scared? Worried? Or have you been in a situation like that in the past?
It is not fun, is it? You are constantly worrying about it and
sometimes all you can do is think about it. You can't sleep, you can't
eat or you eat too much to get rid of the sinking feeling in your
stomach. Sometimes you can get physically sick from this.
How do I know? I was what you would call a worry-wart. I worried
about everything and anything. You can verify it with my family and
ex-husband if you like. It could be about work or family but most of
all I worried about money. Don't we all?!?
I was a champion at making myself sick because of worrying. I would
constantly have an upset stomach and my immune system would get so low
that I would get colds no matter what time of the year it was. And on
top of all that I had allergies during the spring. It would get so bad
that I could not work or do anything because I was so sick.
I firmly believe that all of my symptoms came from worrying.
"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will
eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more
important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at
the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns,
and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable
than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field
grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon
in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God
clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is
thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little
faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?' or ‘What shall we
drink?' or ‘What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these
things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek
first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be
given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for
tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its
own." Matthew 6:25-34 (NIV)
There are plenty of things in this world that would make people want
to worry. But none of them hold a candle to what God can do for you.
I brought this subject up because I was listening to one of my
favorite Christian songs on my husband's radio station and in the
chorus it says, "Hold me Jesus, I'm shaking like a leaf, You have been
King of my glory, won't You be my Prince of Peace." from the song Hold Me Jesus by Rich Mullins. Amy Grant sang it in a tribute to Rich Mullins and now Big Daddy Weave is singing it on the radio.
This was so true for me…I would shake like a leaf. I would be tossed
to and fro. I would doubt that God was greater than my situation. Don't
we all do that? We try and fix things ourselves.
"But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who
doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That
man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a
double-minded man, unstable in all he does." James 1:6-8
We need to be firm on God's foundation. We need to be on the solid
rock. "On the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand."
We need to let God bring peace into our hearts. Believe me, I know
it is hard to stop thinking about your situation. I know it is hard to
trust God in this. You can read a book or watch TV for hours to get
away from it but ultimately the only one that will give you peace is
God Himself. |
