For a while now, what has been upper most in my mind is the on going discussions and stake holders meetings-regulators and the government inclusive - on the strengthening of the stock market .
Our market is young and has the potential for growth .Other world famous markets had a time when they were at this stage .So the question is how do we move on to equity stability in the shortest possible time .with the strategies being arrived by regulators and the government .It is very interesting to know that you right where you are can do something right now to improve the strength of your investment and that of others in the market .
To play your own part -the market in reality is one for all of us-to play your part ,you have to stop any sell mandate you might have given to your stockbroker or that you intend to give .This will reduce the number of equities on offer and consequently improve on the prices of equities .This is the no 1 thing .Take note of the fact that you don't loose money in the market until you have sold an equity .so this action will help improve the value of your portfolio.Next thing is to see this market as a long term investment vehicle where your investments appreciates over time .Unlike a money market type of investment which traditionally has shorter gestation period, the stock market is for long term .Then just know that our market is developing and can only get better and add value to investors' portfolio in the long run .-See what is happening with spring bank for example .By the way this is a good time for you to take position in spring bank .If the merger and acquisition of this bank by one of the major banks takes place ,the equity is likely to up reasonably .I also hope that some mega bank look into Unity Bank as well!
I spoke with a capital market expert-Mr Amaeze Olisa Emeka on what to do to strengten the market .here is his take.
"Investors should realise that the stock market is a market for long term funds .people should have the mentality of investing in the market for long term usually not less than one year If you carry money market mentality to the capital market,it may disrupt a lot of things .For instance I have an investor who told me last time - I have so so amount of money to invest ,If i give to you to buy stocks for me , how much will I get in three weeks .My response to him was that I am a capital market practitioner .That if he wants to invest his money for three weeks that he should go to a money doubler .He laughed and I told him that this is not a laughing matter that only money doublers can tell him what his money will be worth in threee weeks .But if he is coming to the capital market he should be ready to adopt a long term position,at least not less than one year .If you want money that you will use in the next one year or less then go to the money market an d put it - buy treasury bills or put it in fixed deposit account .But if you are coming to the market ,you should be in the position to wait because that is the nature of the market the world over .So investors should be patient. You have not made loss until you sell .I can tell you that in the long run every stock is good .For example we know that spring bank in the past has recorded results that were not very impressive .But today the equity of spring bank is scarce -every body is looking for it .That is the nature of the market .If somebody had lost hope by the time it was sliding and sold it ,by now the person will not reap .And I can tell you that if the technical suspension on spring bank is lifted the equity will exceed 10.00- I can tell you that authoritatively .So in the long run every stock is good -a stock that is not good today will be good tommorrow .So investors should excercise some degree of patience. The Capital market is a market for long term investment and not a short term one ."
