Sarah Palin. Governor of Alaska. 2008 Vice Presidental nominee. A virtual unknown thrust into the national spotlight.

I have come to the conclusion that the Palin popularity explosion will be short lived. From her speech at the convention, through her first campaign appearances, I have been throughly underwhelmed.

Why did McCain pick Palin? Going after disenfranchised Hillary Clinton supporters? Obviously.

Attempting to energize a listless Republican base? If anyone watched the convention, she had a positive effect on the delegates.

However, being a newcomer to the national stage did not stop her from engaging in attacks on Obama. In her position, I understand that she is supposed to be the "attack dog" on the ticket. Ridiculing Obama's past as a community organizer? Does she realize what a "community organizer actually does? If she lived in an urbanized area, with low employment rates, failing schools, and high crime rates, she would know that these organizers play an important role in the everyday lives of low income citizens that need all the help they can get. The attacks sound great to the conventioneers, but her speech was not inclusive of all Americans.

One of the beautiful things about America is the ability to state your opinion. Michelle Obama's "For the first time, I am proud of my country" statement has been a Republican rallying cry. Palin seized upon that by stating" I have always been proud to be an American". Oops! Did she pander to the "America, love it or leave it" crowd? I think so. However, as Americans, there have been many different cultures that have been assimilated into this"melting pot". Without giving a history lesson here, need I remind anyone of the history of Black people in the United States of America? Can anyone say, with a straight face, that Blacks have been treated on a par with other groups in this country? I think not. Therefore, the fact that her husband could become a presidential nominee in this country shows that there has been progress made. Not everything that has been said needs a response, but Palin sound bites will make for great TV ads.

Now, for the Republican double standard. Sarah Palin can toss verbal grenades anytime she wants. If the grenades are returned, what's going to happen? Will it be the gender card? Have we already heard that Joe Biden better be careful at the Vice Presidental debate? He will be accused of going after a woman, not Gov. Palin, the Vice Presidental candidate. Wow.

Family. I agree that candidates families, especially children, should be off limits. Saying that, when a 17 year old young lady becomes pregnant in the inner city, what is the response of most conservatives? Will anyone agree the responses won't be positive in nature? Did I see a group hug on stage with the Palin family at the convention? I'm not criticizing parenting skills, I'm only saying that some are looking at that situation with a sanitized point of view.

The media. Is Palin naive enough to think that the media is going to leave her alone? She was picked at the last possible moment by the McCain camp, and very little was known about her. Like it or not, the media is here to stay, and they have a job to do. She may have been vetted by McCain, but as a public figure, it is open season until the feeding frenzy has been satiated. If she has nothing to hide, all the stones should be overturned soon, and the frenzy will end.

Democrats have nothing to fear. Obama is running on the original platform of change. McCain has been countering what Obama has been doing by jumping on the change bandwagon. Palin is a Category 3 hurricane that will turn into a brief thunderstorm by November. You bring up Rev. Wright, I bring up Troopergate, Alaska style. By the way, in America, everyone is entitled to due process, even allegedly abusive Alaska State Troopers, that just happen to be the ex-brother in law of the current Governor of Alaska. Everyone can continue to throw mud, or we can finally get down to the issues and decide. Until next time.

Dear Judge,

All governmental employees in the United States of America are vetted by the FBI through fingerprinting. There was NO FBI check for Sarah Palin. The campaign’s vetting process consisted of a “Google” search! In her speech, she made inaccurate claims about Obama (see Fact Check) and was demeaning and saracastic. She offended every community organizer, regardless of political party, by trivializing the role. Here’s where she stands on various issues.

• Abortion should be illegal, even in the cases of rape, incest or harm to the mother.

• Wants creationism exclusively taught in the schools.

• Does not believe that global warming is man-made phenomenon.

• Desires to ban all stem-cell research.

• Is against the teaching of sex education in the schools. Is against preventative sexual measures. (Although her daughter is pregnant at 17 years of age).

• Defends her own daughter’s right to privacy even as she would have the government intrude to police the reproduction choices of all other women.

• Has no foreign policy experience. Believes it was “God’s will” to invade Iraq.

• Has no record of supporting conservation. (Wants unlimited drilling of oil in Alaska) regardless of legitimate wildlife issues. Has tried to get the government to take the polar bears off the list of endangered species. Has allowed Chevron to pollute the waters of Alaska while supporting big money from oil companies.

• Is currently under investigation over alleged cover-up regarding conflict of interest about family member. Promised an open investigation and yet is seeking to block it by allowing Bush lawyers to torpedo the case.

• Directed 527 fund-raising groups for embattled Alaskan Senator Ted Stevens who is under criminal investigation. She didn’t say “no thanks” to the “Bridge to Nowhere” until after Congress had already abandoned it but given Alaska a blank check for $223 million in taxpayers’ money anyway. Hired lobbyists to secure earmarks, 20 times the per capita average in other states.

• Has no national security experience, as she never has issued a single command as head of the Alaska National Guard.

• Was nearly recalled as Mayor of Wasilla for firing the police chief and threatening the library director for not supporting her campaign for mayor. She tried to censure certain books that the library had on their shelves.

• Believes the Iraq war was fought for the purpose of securing oil.

• Was affiliated with The Alaskan Independence fringe group who attempted to support efforts for Alaska to break away from the United States.

• Blames the media for intrusion into her political and personal life and yet is unwilling to allow media to have access to her for interviews (other than People or Us magazine).

Good luck to those who vote for this ticket!

James,

As always, thanks for the comments and the info. There was so much to be said with this article, but I found myself needing to shorten it. We have not heard the last of this underqualified candidate. Thanks again.

Excellent reply, James. Thanks for the facts. She's even worse than I realised. She is truly an ugly individual - and it has nothing to do with the outside! I'm growing tired of divisive 'leaders'. And especially when they are potentially in such powerful positions.

Hi James,

I'd like to take your list of Palin's stances one by one, if I may.

Most conservatives believe abortion should be illegal. No shocker there.

She believes in intelligent design, but doesn't want it taught exclusively.

She does not believe that global warming was COMPLETELY man made, but believes that we had enough to do with it that she created committees to look into the climate change problem.

I couldn't find anything on her wanting to ban all stem cell research. Do you have a source on that?

Another falsehood. She does not believe in "abstinence only" education.

Not sure what the next point means? Is that in reference to her stance on abortion? I know what pro-abortion folks say, but killing babies isn't a privacy issue.

She doesn't believe it was "God's will" to invade Iraq. Although she did pray that proceeding with the war was God's will. Not exactly the same. And I'd take her "lack of experience" over Obama's any day.

If you've listened to her speak at all you will realize that she is not against all conservation. She is against panicky environmentalists that have never set foot in ANWR and still claim to know all there is to know about oil in Alaska.

I'm assuming you're referring to the issue with the state trooper ex-brother-in-law. The pbulic safety official that she fired has gone on record as saying that neither she nor anyone in her administration ever tried to persuade him to fire the brother-in-law.

I'll address the next two at the same time. It's convenient how flip-flopping is considered a virtue when the candidate is aligned with your viewpoint.

She did fire the chief of police ... for lying to the city council. And she did ask the librarian if books could be pulled off the shelf for being offensive, though an article published at the time claims that the request was rhetorical. And she did threaten to fire the librarian, though it was over administrative issues, not because she wouldn't support Palin's campaign.

Proof that she believes the Iraq war was fought for oil?

She was not affiliated with the Alaskan Independent Party, though her husband was years ago.

And finally, I'd suggest you turn on the news once in a while. According to her schedule for Saturday, she had 3 media interviews that day alone.

I find it interesting that you ask for fact checking on claims about Obama, but don't bother to check your own facts.

Bill,
Although I hate to give Sarah Palin this much attention, let's review my bullet points.  Sarah Palin is on the fringe right of the Republican policy issues and that should be a concern for all of us since we are now finishing eight years of this ideology.

1. SOME conservatives believe that abortion should be illegal under all circumstances.  There are many, such as McCain's wife who were dismayed by Palin's stance that abortion should be outlawed under ALL circumstances.  Even Dwight D. Eisenhower's grandaughter addressed this issue.
2.  You are accurate about this one.
3.  In an interview for conservative magazine NewsMax, Sarah Palin said " she does not believe that climate change is caused by human behavior."
4.  Her position is clear against stem-cell research.  See the AP, New York Times and Freep
5.  She supports abstinence only programs.
6.  Many conservatives DO NOT believe in the government policing the rights of other people including the issue of abortion.
7.  Proceeding with the war was God's will?  Are you kidding me?
8.  Panicky environmentalists?  How about drilling in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge and trying to curtail putting the polar bear on the list of endangered species?  How about shooting animals out of the window of a plane?
9.  She has blocked a legitimate investigation by an impartial panel to look into allegations of conflict of interest.  This is the women who said she'd be transparent?
10.  The rest of the bullets are accurate including her affiliation with the Alaskan Independent Party.  Her husband was a former member.
Sarah Palin has had NO major media outlet interviews at this time.  Get your facts straight and quit the right-wing blustering.  She will be going on ABC news on Thursday to give her first interview.  Should be interesting.  Now, who is it here who doesn't understand the facts?

Excellent article JD and I most certainly agree. And as far Ms. Palin and the Republican party dismissing the importance of a community organizers role in fighting for change, equality, injustice and equal rights...let me remind them of a community organizer who stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial 45 years ago and announced to the world that he had a DREAM...He's name was Martin Luther King Jr.

Hi Roschelle,

Palin is being positioned as a person that can say what she wants. Heaven help anyone who dares to respond to her or questions her. You will be branded as a person who wants to verbally assail a "hockey mom". That's a load of bull. Palin has absolutely no idea of the various responsibilities that community organizers assume. That's what happens when a socially clueless person is picked as a vice presidential candidate. Thanks for your comments, and don't worry about typos. It's all good !

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your comment. I agree with what you are saying, but look at it this way. This can't get much worse than the last eight years! Or maybe it could. We could unleash McCain-Palin on the USA.

Hi JD,

Excellent article. What more can I say than what has already been said. Unfortunately, until November we won't see any closure. I sure hope that people go vote uninformed. To James, Roschelle and Mark, I couldn't have said anything else or better.

God bless

Thanks Michelle,

I can't wait until Palin starts to give interviews. Maybe we will see a rehearsed parrot spitting out force fed lines. There has to be a reason she has not been allowed to speak to the press. She certainly said enough at the convention. Maybe there will be some type of closure after her first couple of interviews. Thanks again,

As an outsider looking in, I am horrified by this 'at best' crass woman who appears to personify the worst of America. She's like an incendiary device and I just hope she doesn't blow up in either America's face or the world's. Just when I thought the extreme swing to the right was nearing it's apex, it is swinging further. Once I believed in real leadership, but we are in an era of withdrawal, division, hatred and fear. And if I hear one more voice suggest it is the fault of 'the other', then it deepens my belief that 'the other' has then won.

Australia endured a period called 'Hansonism', an ugly period. It would seem you are about to endure an even more ugly period called 'Palinism'. I only hope it is short-lived. Preferably not beyond November 4. I think she will burn bright and fizzle to nothing. I hope so, for all our sakes.

Hi Hannah,

It is my opinion that this is partisan, gender influenced politics at its worst. I think candidates should be picked based on qualifications, not for any other reason. It is simply foolhardy to say the McCain-Palin ticket is the best the Republicans could do. I also think this ticket is guilty of politics of fear, pandering to specific groups of voters, and misrepresenting facts. November 4th will be here faster than we realize, and hopefully, we will not begin a ugly period. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Hello Hannah,
It never ceases to amaze me how stupid many Americans can be.  It is embarrassing to me. They are actually buying the "mythology of this former beauty queen" for Vice President.  She is George W. Bush in female attire.

Hi Judge - Very scathing article. You must be terrified of Palin. I don't blame you. She is conservative. I wouldn't worry too much, though. She will only be vice president - for now.

Obama, thankfully, chose the wrong person for VP. Do you know what really has decided this election? The order in which the nominees chose their running mates. If McCain chose first, Obama would have picked Hillary, and Obama would easily win. Obama chose first, and did not pick Hillary. Why didn't he pick Hillary? He wanted to give her the one finger salute. Thankfully, it has backfired on him. When your primary reason for making a decision is spite, nothing good ever comes from that decision.

I would not be surprised if McCain did not run for re-election in 2012, and the nation was deciding between Hillary and Sarah. The first all female election, right Mrs. President? Who do you think will win, the self absorbed and self obsessed Hillary, or the "in your face" truth telling Palin? I think in 2012 Hillary will transform from "the most intelligent woman in the world" to the most frustrated woman in the world. Look on the bright side, Hillary can go home to her husband and 100 million dollars. Oops, silly me. I wasn't thinking. Let's look at that again. The bright side? Hillary can go home to 100 million dollars.

Hi Anon,

You call this article scathing? This is nothing more than observations on my part. Right or wrong in reference to a vice presidential candidate? November 4th will certainly tell. I pointed out basic facts, and the only fear present is politics of fear. My major point is to stop the negativity and talk about facts. Will it take more than a new president to get out of this mess? Of course.

By the way, Palin is being interviewed by Charlie Gibson on ABC, Thursday and Friday(9/11 & 9/12) Let's see if she can answer a question candidly, not with avoidance and evasion. Thanks for commenting.

Judge, this has nothing to do with your article I am commenting to the comments.  I Just can't get over why it it all matters? It is exactly what I have been writing to. Focus on nothing, yes nothing, keep your eye off the target and fixzed away from the problems. I say tell it all to the average person, getting hit with usury, foreclosure, high fuel and utility bills, lack of credit, bailouts for those who have, loss of jobs, etc, etc, etc. Honestly, just what have these politcians done or failed to do and what will they really do verses what they promise. As they say, "it takes two to tango" and Republicans and Democrats don't Tango unless it is for the Global agenda.  Godo article, you stirred the pot.

Robert - I agree with you that none of this really matters. It will take a lot more than a good president to fix our problems - the very ones you point out. I don't think any president will ever have the desire to fix them, or even the ability. The people are the only ones who have the power to fix them. We The People will not fix them until we are mad enough. We are not mad enough yet. My question is, how corrupt will things have to get before we get mad enough? I care about the presidential elections, because I am looking for the answer to that question.
