Real or fake? This question is asked of a lot of things: paintings, jewelry, bosoms and yes, handbags. Whether your Louis Vuitton is real or fake is your business, isn’t it?

Well, yes and no. Obviously, if your LV is real, you will probably eagerly correct anyone that hints that it is not. After all, you paid good money for the bag, and might even be appalled that someone would assume it is a replica.

On the other hand, if your bag were a replica, would you really tell people that it is a fake? Would you tell them by purchasing a replica, instead of the real thing, that you knowingly took money away from the designers that created the real bag? Would you mention that the money you spent for the bag possibly went to terrorist organizations. Or that the manufactures of your fake bag could have used their handbag business to transport thousands of dollars worth of cocaine into the country? I doubt you would mention any of these things to an inquisitive acquaintance.

I know it sounds harsh, but knowingly buying a replica bag is wrong. (Note: buying replica handbags is not illegal but selling them is.)

Designers like Gucci, Kate Spade, Chanel and Hermes charge so much for their product because they are highly sought after and they are made from quality materials. Many bags by these designers are made by hand. Also, these designers spend millions on advertising, customer care, quality assurance and customs. By buying a replica, you are taking directly from these designers.

Buying replicas also takes from the US economy. Companies that sell replica handbags often do so as cash based, tax free business. If you have bought a replica handbag before, think back, did you pay tax for on the purchase. Probably not.

We all know that authentic designer handbags are pricey, but that doesn’t mean you should buy a knock-off. Just because something is out of your price range is no reason to rip off the company that manufactures the product.

Real or replica…which is right for you? I don’t really see you have a choice. Always buy real.

I often go to Canal St. to buy replica handbags. As you state in your article, it's not illegal to buy, right? If I had millions, sure I'd buy authentic. But, I'm only a thousandaire. I have an infant daughter who's going to college eventually and that's what I'm saving my money for. I love Chanel and Chloe handbags, but since my daughter being educated means more to me than lining the pockets of millionaires, I'm buying

This is just an ignorant article and viewpoint. Why are you talking about sales tax?? If it were legal to sell these items then sales tax would be charged. You seriously needed to think about that before saying it because the very idea is stupid. People buying knockoff purses do not take away from the actual designer, because these people are buying knockoffs because they cannot afford the real thing. These people would never buy a real purse. Also, think about this... With all the problems going on in the world right now, you are thinking about this! You are thinking about purses so intently! Now that is ridiculous!! Even more so..think about the people who are actually spending thousands of dollars on designer purses!!! They could be doing much better things with their money. Seriously, who cares if Donatella Versace or whoever makes a couple thousand less this year?

so do i. if these million dollar companies would sell the purses at reasonable prices there would be no need for replica companies. the everyday woman can not afford to pay $1000.00 for a handbag.

I THINK OWNING A DESIGNER BAG IS A PRIVLIDGE NOT A RIGHT. IF YOU CAN NOT AFFORD THE REAL THING YOU ARE INSULTING ALL OF US THAT CAN. TRY SAVING FOR SOMETHING YOU WANT INSTEAD OF THE MENTALITY THAT YOU DESERVE THE SAME STATUS AS THE REST OF US... NEXT YOU WILL COVER YOUR FORD WITH MERCEDES LOGOS AND TRY TO SELL IT AS A REPLICA! FAKE DIAMONDS, PURSES, CLOTHING, SUNGLASSES... IT SHOWS YOU ARE BROKE AND HAVE NO CLASS. BUY THE REAL ONES!

Hey, comment above me....way to show class by shoving it down everyone's throats and accusing people of being broke. How entirely classy of you. And if you are "insulted" by people who want to buy replicas, get over yourself. We aren't thinking of you at all when we buy one. Don't flatter yourself by thinking we're insulting you. Trust us, we aren't. And one last thing...I would think that someone such as you (someone who has class) would be more educated than you are, judging from the spelling and grammar from your aforementioned post. Don't rich people go to good schools? Wouldn't a rich person attend a school that would teach a student how to spell 'privilege'? Sorry, but next time you want to jump on your high horse and accuse people of being classless and broke, try sticking to words you actually know, or just shut up.

^I agree with that!

I buy fakes because I am only a teenager. Sure, I am in a wealthy family but my parents make sure not to spoil me, so i only get 13 bucks a week for allowance. I do not want to spend 3-5 years saving up for a dumb AUTHENTIC purse..i am thinking about my car fund HELLO!? I have only bought one or two fake purses, and you know why I do it? Because in my town without a bag you are looked at as poor. I do not want everyone looking at my family and thinking we do not work hard and make good money just because of their ignorance to buy me a real bag. and i want to be accepted in my group of friends, because they all have real bags..I don't look at "fake bags" as fakes i look at them as a brand in themselves, and from a teen's point of view, if you want to fit in but don't have the cash to buy the "fit in" bag, but you DO have the money for a fake that looks real...why not? Now, to all the mom's and such that are buying fake, come on. be confident in yourself you are an adult. I am not saying it is right for a teen, wrong for a women, i am just saying that by the time I am older i hope to have
[1] money to buy a real bag
[2]if that doesn't happen, decent friends that dont pressure me to buy a fake, in my little town, there is really no choosing. I am stuck with all my snobby friends that pressure me to have the bag.

anyway, people have good reason for what they do. thank you for taking the time to make average people feel terrible, deanna key. i am sure you had "perfectly good reason"

I buy store brand items and most of them look and taste the same, I save a buck on everthing I can and If I had a REAL Handbag, I would most likely never carry it because it cost so much I would be afraid of scratching it or getting it dirty, so a Replica or Designer Inspired one is the way to go ...unless you are made of money like all the stuck up Stars out there.

Regardless of how much money you have, every individual has the right to purchase whatever they want to purchase. If a person worth 50 million bucks wants to buy a replica that looks like the real thing then who's business is that anyway? Wouldn't the person that purchased the replica have the right to keep their personal business to themselves? The comment left by the woman who "can afford the real thing" can kiss some butt. Anyone can purchase whatever they want and they shouldn't be subjected to the judgmental thinking of the high class (I have money because of my husband) comments. Make your own money <snip - be nice!> and stop judging other people on the purchases that they make in this free country. People don't have to afford the real thing and it isn't hurting the designer a bit. If someone wanted to spend thousands on a handbag then they will but, if they don't want to then they won't. What business is it to anyone but, the purchaser. Get a life. Do Pilates or something and worry about yourself.

here's my comment to all!! If you want to buy the real thing!! Good for you!!! If you want the replica one!! Your a smart cookie!! I purchased a replica and then purchased the real on special occasion ! ( birthday, Xmas) I have them both!!! I compared them , I can't even tell !! You probably have to be ultra jealous and snoop around to make sure that I have the authentic one!!! I enjoyed them all!!! My bags doesn't define me as a person nor my status in my circle of friends!! I have friends who can afford them, but still buy the replica especially if the real one is sold out!!! Or their favorite real bag is ruined and they absolutely love it they will buy the replica!! I think we outsmart the people that buy the real one!!! Il use my money in buying the real thing that will definitely will not tarnish!!! Or has true value in the long run!!! (gold, diamond, college education, and house) Ladies bags come and go , changes every season!! So spend your money wisely!!!

I'm glad replica are out there!!! At least we have an option!!! Some bags are overrated!! Over price!!! I just wonder how well they pay their laborer ?? If you want real or replica!!! The choice is yours, but dont be upset' if you see someone with the same bag as yours for a fraction of price!!

It is so sad that there is actually someone out there, who thinks her right in life, because she has a little more than someone else, is to "rock" the real bags. Her right in life because she has money, but it's not hers so she can just throw it away! I would be very surprised if she actually has any "real" friends with a comment like that. She has probably never worked a day in her life. Otherwise she would get- what is so easy to see, to anyone, with common sense. Why pay their ridiculous prices, if you dont have to? I make a good living and don't intend on wasting it. But that's what smart working women do. Im sure she probably has a dad in the Hotel business and is running around collecting small dogs to dress up.

Hi there all,

I've always purchased Guess handbag original from anywhere $30-$50 only when they are on SALES. But, I've always wanted to have one of either Coach or Louis Vuitton and I could NOT afford $200-$2,000. When I realized how much people are selling inspired or replica I was able to finally get one. Even if I have millions, I would never purchased over $100 in one purse. Is that make me no class and broke? I don't think so. I've work w/someone who always purchased handbags strictly original and is always broke. Anyway, to help others who always dreamed of owning a designer handbags so I decided to sell an inspired designer. They are not authentic, they are simply a designer inspired in which the design was made more to looks like designer brands. I was doing my research, that selling replicas are legal as long as you do not pass it around as 100% authentic like other people do.

It really disturbs me that "you people" think it's okay to buy knock off merchandise and walk around not caring how the companies that make them and the people that spend good money to buy the real ones feel. If it was legal to sell them, you wouldn't need to go down a dark alley or attend those stupid parties. How many business vendors that have a licenses do you see selling those products in their store fronts???????? I will tell you many of you that make those awful purchases walk into the same store to compare your "knock offs", Guess what, you can tell the difference. The sad reality is that if you saved for the real thing you would get the privileges that come with the real thing like "warranties". The designers create and sell those bags for the price that they do cause they come with certain perks which spending half of that on a fake won't get you. I work hard and save to be able to afford what I want which is the real deal, you guys should try that sometime.
