I know that Ike has brought destruction and heartache for many. With it also came some blessings. Here is a list of blessings I saw throughout the ordeal.
Reporters risking life and limb literally to keep the public up to date on the timing of the storm.
Volunteers from all across the nation and Canada coming to help hang power lines, hand out food or just offer a hand.
Neighbors helping neighbors by cooking and sharing resources. Reports have come in from all over of extension cords being ran across streets from generators to neighbors.
The ex-Coast guard member who lived on the Boliver Peninsula who decided to stay through the storm. The man was swept out into the gulf when his house started to flood and survived for 11 hours until he was rescued.
Families giving up their spots in shelters for families with younger children.
Teenagers once again in the streets riding bicycles, walking with friends and just playing. No electronics left them realizing some of the finer gifts from God.
Cooler temperatures. The first days we saw ninety degree weather, now we are in an unseasonably seventies.
Trees that missed houses or cars by inches.
Trees that didn't miss being cut by neighbors to offer relief.
Electric workers being cheered by the community as they travel in and out of neighborhoods.
Families running to give waters and treats to garbage workers.
The Houston SPCA saving baby squirrels and flying squirrels who had lost their parents. It was heartwarming to watch them being fed by syringes on the news.
Families and friends coming together as bonfires are built and campfires are planned.
Families with electricity cramming people in to enjoy a night of power.
Freezers full of water containers to make ice for neighbors still without electricity.
No Palin/McCain/Obama/Biden debates and arguments.
Families growing closer as school and businesses are closed.
I am sure others have seen just as many if not more blessings through this ordeal. My hope is that as more Houstonians come online, they too will share their stories. Feel free to leave them in the comment section.
