This article provides stay at home moms with advice on preparing for a divorce. It includes tips like asking for alimony, getting a job, getting help from family and friends, and more.

Divorce is not only difficult from an emotional point of view, but it's extremely expensive at times and will leave you without your spouse's income or help with financial matters.  You will also have less help with the children if you will be their primary caretaker.  There are a lot of things that a divorce will change and for stay at home moms, these changes can be extremely difficult to deal with.  Here are some tips on preparing for a divorce.

Consider Asking for Alimony –

Because you have stayed at home taking care of the children and probably the house, the bills and other household chores, you may be entitled to alimony.  If it was an agreement between you and your spouse that you would raise the children and take care of the things at home, you have a good chance of getting this help.  Alimony is money that your ex spouse pays you for a period of time and will help you get on your feet and financially secure.  Talk to your attorney about the possibility of alimony and whether you would be a good candidate to be awarded alimony.

Get a Job –

One of the first things you need in order to prepare for a divorce is a positive income flow.  This means that you will need to get some type of job.  If you don't possess any special skills, try to find something you are comfortable doing.  Can you provide child care for a couple of children during the week in order to create an income?  Perhaps you're able to provide cleaning services to a few homes during the week.  If you do have special skills, try to find something that you're able to use them with.  Juggle things so that your children are taken care of and you're still able to earn an income.  Save all of the extra money you get because you will need it.

Get Help from Friends and Family –

Not only is it possible that your friends and family can help with your children while you earn a living, but you may be able to stay with one of them while you get your financial position straightened out and improved.  Because this is such a difficult time, many of them may offer to help you out without you having to ask.  If you do have to ask, remember that family and friends are there to help and it's nothing to be ashamed of.  Everyone requires a little help from time to time.  Find a stable place for you and your children to reside until you're able to find a place of your own. Again – save, save save so that you're able to become financially independent.

Divorce can be very difficult and can be extremely challenging for a stay at home mom.  By using the tips above, you can prepare yourself for divorce and recuperate from the loss of your husband's income.  We are much stronger than we think we are and these times test what we are made of.  Show that you are made of strong stuff and you can do it
