Identity Theft – Personal Impact

First let's look at some facts:

The Amnesty law passed by the US Congress in 1986 opened an avalanche of illegal immigrants seeking the same opportunity in the future.

Cuba 's shipment of "Marielito" refugees who were scattered through out US states without documentation (due to their criminal records most were rejected by the honest Cuban communities in the US ).

The total population of the US as of 2006 was about 300 million. (including illegal persons in US)

News media reports during the years between 2000 and 2006 placed the estimate of illegal residents in US at about 15 Million people. Some having resided in country for many years.

Population growth from births in US plus legal and illegal residents added 12.6 million people between years 2000 to 2006.

The new laws requiring passports to cross the US borders (entering or leaving) will prevent the illegal population from traveling unless they possess a passport that demonstrates that they are legally here. (They can obtain a passport from their country of origin and may leave the US with the foreign passport.

Improved border security will make it more difficult to illegally enter or re-enter the country.

Considering the above facts, there will be more pressure on the illegal population to obtain fraudulent documentation which in turn makes you, more prone to become a victim of ID theft!

High rates of crime and over crowded jails, result in greater number of parolees and/or felons trying to escape detection.

The higher the number of persons seeking fraudulent documents, the higher the chance that your identity may be in peril.

Therefore:

If you have a valid US passport, guard it well, if not . . . . Get your passport as soon as possible!

If your US passport has or is expiring, RENEW it! Don't let someone that may resemble you place their photograph on the new one!

Do not through away your old passports (they are proof of identity regardless of how long they have expired). If you do not want it, shred it!

If your passport is lost or stolen . . . Report it immediately to the police and to The department of State!
