Around the country many pool leagues are about to begin or have recently done so. This is the best time to go over the league rules. Of course if you've been playing for years like some people you already know them like the back of your hand. It never hurts, although, to initiate a discussion with fellow team mates about rules your pool association is changing or any rumors of new ones coming down the pipeline. I am getting ready to play in a BCA league for the first time. I actually played in an APA league for about 3 years, 2 of those captained my own team so I knew the APA rules very well. If I were getting ready to start playing in an APA league, I would still have to brush up on the rules because it's been a while. There are a few differences between the two so I borrowed a BCA Pool League Player Handbook to read up on the rules.

Whereas it is imperative that the team captain and co-captain know the rules and know where to find them in the book, it is also equally important that all players know the rules as well. In the beginning of the BCA Handbook it states under Sportsmanship; Know the rules. Most disputes can be avoided if both players are knowledgeable about the rules of the game.'

So this first rule or guideline of sportsmanship is exactly what I'm talking about. To ensure that the match goes smoothly, with little or no disputes, and people can have fun without any harsh disputes (and I've seen quite a few in my experience) please get to know the rules.

Each player upon receiving a handbook should make time to read it, whenever you can until you read the whole thing. Don't argue with your opponent if you don't know the rules. If you like to fight, go join boxing, or become a lawyer. lol Having respect for other players is a requirement under Sportsmanship and should be practiced by everyone. If someone is treated disrespectfully I believe it is everyone else's duty to stand up for that person and not stand by and allow it to go unchecked.

I am happy to report that so far, I am very please with my new pool league. We had our first match and it was great. We had seven strong representing our team. It was great to come together, all of us, a couple of newcomers joining those who have played together for years. We all played and it was great! So all I gotta say now is..

Happy shooting everybody!
