As parents, the thought of sending our children off to college should be a glorious and happy thought. We all dream about the day that our sons' or daughters' announce their acceptance into college. We spend years saving money and preparing for the day. We weigh out the pros and the cons when choosing a college such as distance from home, curricular activities, which college best suites our child's dreams for the future. However, do we ever consider safety? Is safety an issue when choosing a college? Disturbingly, yes it is. In today's society, crime on college campus is at an all time high; and even more so for women.

It is reported that: 1 out of every 4 women will be assaulted sexually on school campus.

1 out of every 8 women will be raped during their transition through college.

I am sure this is startling news for most parents. So, what can we do as parents to insure the safety of our children?

It is the duty of a parent to educate our daughters and prepare them in advance to the harsh reality of the world. No parent wants to tell their children that the world is a dangerous place. Nor do we want our children to live in fear. However, awareness is a powerful tool in self defense.

When choosing a college for your child, don't be afraid to ask the question "Is my child safe at this school." If you don't ask the question, who will? Go with your child to examine the campus.

Last but not least, prepare your child for the worst of events. Thanks to the advancement of technology there are many different products of self defense available at a reasonable price.

For example: Stun Gun or Taser Gun

Both the stun gun and taser gun are very powerful non lethal weapons that are easy to use and easily kept. A stun gun is defined as a hand held weapon that is battery operated and works by sending off electric charges through a persons body when pressed against them and activated by the trigger button. Its target is incapable of movement for a short period of time; however, he or she will not suffer long term severe damage or death. A taser gun is another hand held weapon that delivers an electrical charge. However, with the taser gun you are able to defend yourself from an attacker from a distance. With this device you can avoid any contact with the assailant and or injury occurring to yourself. Either choice, both weapons are proven to be the best choice for a non lethal self defense weapon.

Sending your child off to college should be a joyful and memorable chapter in your life. This should not be a time of worry and despair. Thanks to the advancement of modern day technology it does not have to be. A Stun Gun or Taser Gun may not be the kind of school supplies you planned on buying for your child before college; but, it does bring peace of mind and safety to the ones you love.
