Have you ever been near the perfume counter at your favorite store? You suddenly get overwhelmed by the multitude of fragrances. Some are to strong or sweet, while others to musky and dry. Yet out of all the different aromas your nose seems to find one scent that is very pleasing. We then have to check each bottle until we find that one scent that has been teasing us.

Different Scents: It is truly amazing how our olfactory bulb can differentiate amongst all the different aromas. Like fingerprints, every plant that contains essential oils contains a different scent. The molecular structure of each scent is different. This is how our olfactory bulb can tell the difference between a rose and lilac or thyme and basil. Their molecules all have separate shapes.

Emotional Effects: One of the proven aspects of aromatherapy is how it affects the mind. There are some essential oils which lift your spirits and act as antidepressants. There are some that work as relaxants and others stimulants. You will find that some oils help you to think faster and with greater clarity while others work on your emotions.

What are the Benefits: Does this all still seem a little mysterious? Good! This just means you are still curious about what essential oils can do for you. Some of the benefits you will receive come more subtly than others.

Take notes!

Check your emotional state of mind, your mood and stress level.

Then start a daily routine of diffusing essential oils. After a week take a look back at your notes. See if you don't feel better about yourself. You no doubt have more energy, less stress and more than likely are in a better mood. Chances are you are more relaxed and have had more restful sleep. A told you are a happier person. When you are happy you feel good about yourself. It also gives you the feeling of being in more control of your life. You don't get frustrated as easily and tend to be less combative or angry.

Do you want to make your reaction time quicker, or have greater clarity of thought? If so, you should consider peppermint or eucalyptus essential oils. These oils are stimulants and will intensify brain wave activity. The effect is similar to drinking a cup of coffee. The essential oils however do not effect the adrenal gland the way coffee does.

Is your mind racing? Do you need to slow it down to relax? Chamomile is the essential oil you may be looking for. Chamomile will slow the brain waves much like a sedative, but without the side effects.

Research: Psychologist have been able to confirm that pleasant smells put people in better moods. The end result of a better mood translates into more of a willingness to cooperate and compromise. Other studies were done on the New York subway system. Food scents were piped into the cars. There was 40% less pushing and shoving while under the influence of the smell of food. Abusive and vile comments also declined during this test.

Have you ever had an M.R.I.? This can be an intimidating procedure. They place you on a table then slide you into a tube that is about 2 feet in diameter. For the next 30 to 45 minutes you hear a series of buzzes, clicks, ticks and clunks. A cancer center in New York scented the room with vanilla and found the patients were more relaxed during this procedure. They also noted that using scents through out the hospital helped to relieve anxiety levels of patients, staff, friends and family visiting patients.

Continuing Research: Researchers are always looking for ways to use scents to improve peoples lives. Studies are being done with Alzheimer's, schizophrenia, bi-polar disease and other debilitating diseases of the mind. So far they have not found a cure, however they have been able to improve the quality of life for those suffering with these conditions.

Scentsable Approach: We encounter many different scents on a daily basis. The size and shape of scent molecules determine the message sent to our brain from our olfactory bulb. It has been proven that pleasant aromas put us in better moods. If essential oils can provide a better quality of life for those with schizophrenia, Alzheimer's and bi-polar just think what they can do for you!

Remember always use 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oils for optimum results!
