Do you get gifts that you just don't like and wish you could return because even the store credit would be better than the gift? I'm going to assume that we all have a bad gift story. Sometimes we are the receiver of the bad gift, and sometimes we are the giver. Gift giving can be a struggle sometimes even when the recipient is someone that we know and love. With a few simple tips, you can improve your gift giving skills and ensure that your gifts will not be returned this season.
It's okay to investigate: Ask others that know the gift recipient what he/she might like. You don't have to go it alone. Take mental notes during conversations and pay attention when the person you hope to buy for is sharing what they like and don't like.
Consider the Tastes of Others: Don't shop at your favorite stores; shop at theirs! We have a tendency to look for gifts at the places we normally shop, but if this is not a place where the giftee shops, chances are that you aren't going to find what they like.
Avoid the "because you need it" Gift: Yes, I know, everyone likes to get something that they need. However, we would prefer it not come as gift! Gifts should be surprises. Gifts should be unexpected. Gifts should not be a reminder of the "shoulds" in our life. So, if you are tempted to buy your chucky Aunt Jane a copy of your favorite workout video, don't. She would probably be happier with something that showed you were thinking of what she wanted not needed.
Consider the Schedule: A popular gift these days is event tickets. In fact, I love tickets to a concert, show, movie, sporting event, etc. as a gift. However, this is a big mistake if you do not first consider the availability of the recipient. Make sure that your gift doesn't get sold on eBay by clearing the calendar first.
Throw Tradition to the Wind: Who really eats fruit cake anyway? What's the deal with dated tree ornaments? Is it really necessary to buy your kids socks and underwear every year? What about that scarf and those mittens? Break the mold this year. Buy something totally unexpected.
Join a forum: Okay, this may seem contrary to tip #1, but if you aren't getting the help you need from people you know, try asking people you don't for new ideas. Forums are a great place to meet new people and exchange ideas. I am a member of several different forums. It is wonderful to read the thoughts and ideas of others. As gifts go, there are some really fun and creative gift giving tips out there. Go find them!
Gift giving doesn't have to be hard. The saying goes, "It's the thought that counts." That is so true, but first you need to put some thought into it! Show your love for one another this season by putting others first when giving gifts. It will make the season brighter and the return lines shorter! Join a Forum
