How does one go about finding one's power animal? There are many ways to do this, but generally, the easiest way is to just pay attention to your life. Even if you live in the city, animals will cross your path-they will come to you and this is something to pay attention to.
I have Native American heritage, yes, like many born in America, but that doesn't mean finding your power animal is only for those with that heritage or who live in America. We are one people on one planet and all share in this heritage. We all hunger for something that has been lost in our lives in this technical day and age in which we live-something we once had when we lived close to nature. If you live in the city this is especially true.
Besides connecting with one's own Source, one needs to find a connection with nature. Your power animal can provide that to you. Finding your power animal is an easy enough thing to do, but don't get hung up on just one animal. There are many who will bring their teachings and protection to you if you but pay attention.
The easiest method to finding your power animal is to find a place where you can sit quietly. You will be doing a "kind of" meditation. Place your hands in your lap, palms up and breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth very gently. Take deep but comfortable breaths. Breathe from your belly instead of your chest until you feel relaxed. If sitting up doesn't work for you, then lie down upon your bed and do the same thing, arms to your side, palms up.
Please note that if you are focused on a domestic animal, this is NOT a power animal. Domestic animals have already agreed to be a part of our lives in the physical. What we are seeking is something from nature, in its natural setting. Your power animal can come from any continent. Don't limit yourself to just one continent. Be open to what may show up.
Now that you are relaxed, I want you to imagine yourself inside an old-fashioned movie theatre, the kind that has a stage in front of it and a curtain across the screen. The curtain is a velvety deep maroon, thick and lush. You are sitting in the middle of the theatre and you are the only one there. It is a totally safe environment, the doors are locked and no one can get in.
The room darkens and a single soft light appears on stage. To the right of the stage there are some stairs. You look over and you catch a glimpse of an animal. What is it? What do you see? Watch as it climbs the stairs and arrives in the middle of the stage. Maybe it hops up the stairs. Maybe it flies above them. What do you see? The curtain opens and now this creature stands in front of the screen. The light dims and a movie begins playing on the screen. The movie is of a scene from nature. You see the animal step from the stage into the screen and it is there now on the screen. You see it going about its daily life. It turns and looks back at you. It looks you right in the eye. It turns back and trots, flies, scampers, or hops off over the horizon. The movie stops and the curtain closes.
Once you have seen your power animal like this, trust in what you see. To find out what qualities the animal is bringing to you, go out to the internet and look up this animal. You can also put the words "power animal" into Google and many sites will come up. Find one that resonates with you and read up on your animal. If you can't find your animal there, go to another site, or go to an encyclopedia. These are the qualities your power animal is bringing to your life right now.
One of my power animals is the red tail hawk. Birds of this nature generally are considered messengers, which interestingly enough falls in line with what I love to do: writing. Writers are messengers; so I consider Hawk to be involved with all my writings. But I've been visited by Owl, Wolf, Bear, Eagle, Bobcat, Coyote, Crow, Beaver, Mountain Lion, Fox, Mouse, Raccoon, and many other such creatures. Each visit brought me something I needed to know or some quality I needed to manifest in my life. You may oftentimes have more than one power animal in your life. Sometimes they will change.
This is an excellent meditation to do before you go to sleep. Once you find your power animal, you can ask them to stand guard while you sleep as well. Don't think that because you've experienced this internally, that it is not true or just your imagination. The imagination is the realm of spirit in many ways and some of our most powerful experiences will come from this area of our life, if we but open to it.
When I'm driving to work and I'm thinking of those things I need to do or experience, oftentimes I will see a red tail hawk above or on a freeway light post right at the moment of the thought. This is a confirmation to me that I am on the right path with my thinking. Each animal in the animal kingdom has unique qualities that can teach us what we need to know in the moment if we but pay attention to their movement in and out of our lives.
Is there a mouse scurrying through your house and things? Mouse is there to teach you about awareness, about paying attention to the small details of your life. Oftentimes we overlook these things in our desire to see the big picture. Mouse is telling you not to overlook the obvious.
Don't overlook the presence of any wild animal in your life. They are gift from the Mother and they have something to share with you. If you want to have a more vivid experience, find a place in nature where you can go and be alone. A wooded glen, whatever calls to you. Go there. Go there and sit and be quiet for more than just ten minutes. Embrace the nature around you. Breathe with the trees; they will breathe in what you breathe out.
Wait there with an open heart; the Mother will bring you a gift.
