There are lots and lots of social networks around the internet these days. From MySpace to FaceBook, and tons in between, if you're looking for a means to meet other people, there's a plethora of sites available.

Having been quite limited in mobility for some time, and wanting to have an alternative to those funky dating sites, I thought I'd look into a few networking sites instead. I wasn't (and still am not) looking for dates. I was looking for like-minded people who might inspire & be inspired by each other. I wanted a place where I could stretch my creative muscles and share what I do. I wanted a place where there would be no foul language, no porn, no ugliness. Not surprisingly, I found more than a few. {Guess it's true...you always find what you're looking for, eh?}

So, I thought I'd share a couple with you, in case you're 'in the market' for some stretching too. The first is probably my favorite, mostly because of the founder's vision, his heart & the folks who participate. It's called Jason's Network, home of the world's most beautiful people. And let me tell you, he's not kidding. The folks at this site are incredibly kind, talented, creative and caring. Reaching 'across the pond' from the U.S. to Europe, you'll find a vast array of wonderful characters. Best of all, Jason is a very 'hands on' kind of guy. If you need help, he's there. If you have a comment or suggestion, he listens. If you just want to send a hug, he'll send two back! Gotta love a guy like that! I've been a member there for about six months, and it just gets better all the time. He's got some lofty goals, all of which, I'm certain, he'll reach. He's just like that.

Another really terrific site is Gaia. Gaia is a bit different... a bit more esoteric. But still, a wonderful community of people who really do wish to help, share and make a difference in the world. There aren't as many options for customizing your page, but it's still a very lovely place to stop in and visit, share, and learn. Gotta love that too!

Facebook is the last of the sites I frequent. It's kind of a 'grown-up' MySpace. More of an 'experienced' group than on MySpace and not as much of the off-the-wall feel to it. I think the thing that makes Facebook fun is the 'wall' feature, which allows you to write on other people's 'walls'...sort of like graffiti on the net. Just fun, easy stuff. Nothing nearly as intense as the others. You can play games (my roommate plays Scrabble with his family from the site. An ongoing game that makes the man crazy, but it keeps him connected to those far away.), you can pose questions, you can meet people you don't know by way of people you have in common. Networking. Guess that's why they call it that.

I've met some of the most amazing people via these sites. People who really give a hoot about humanity, about the planet, about making the world a better place. People who honestly care. People with a sense of humor, and something to say. And some of those people have even helped me move through some pretty horrific times. Just plain ol' good folk. So, if you're in the market for a new adventure, go check out one (or more!) of these sites. Fun stuff, indeed!
