As technology booms, making our lives more convenient, people continue to gain weight. From remote controls to online movie rentals, the average individual's life is less active than twenty-five years ago. At the same time, obesity is an epidemic whereas over 70% of the US population is considered overweight! What is the connection between technology and obesity? Lack of mobility while consuming more calories than we expend is the connection and reason why obesity is an issue. If you are grappling with weight management, it is not difficult to reach your goal, despite all of the claims you may have heard as well as your continuous failed attempts. If you know the concept of managing your personal bank account, managing your "caloric account" is just the same with the following rule: calories in vs. calories out.

Like a bank account, we consistently put money in our savings or checking account, intending to have at least a positive balance. If we take more money out than we put in the bank, our resources decrease, eventually leaving us with a negative balance. If you are trying to save up for a new expense such as an LCD television, your objective is to place more money in the account than you expend in order to have a surplus of money. And finally, spending as much as we insert leaves us at zero. In addition, if you do not pay attention to recording your earnings and expenses, you can easily attain overdraft charges from your bank! In the same respect, the same holds true for weight management.

It's not so much about the amount of macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, fats) one consumes despite what many diet fads suggest. Calories are the determining factor as to whether one will lose, maintain, or gain weight. Like the bank account example, considering money represents calories, if you are trying to lose weight pay attention to the calories you are consuming or putting in the bank (your body) while spending more calories through exercise and movement. If there is a desired food you want, like saving for a television, you must save up for that snack or food and do the work or eat less in order to afford it. When it comes to weight-loss, overdraft fees and a negative account is the goal. In terms of weight maintenance and gain, one must consume as much or more calories that you expend thus having a positive account balance.

Invest in a calorie counter and look into how many calories one expends depending on the activity she does. This can easily be found online. Understanding how many calories one consumes versus how much he expends is an easy and important way to maintain one's weight. Aside from the health and nutritional implications, it doesn't matter in the beginning what kind of calorie or food you consume or the type of exercise you perform. In order to lose weight, the most important thing to know is how many calories is you putting in the "bank" and taking out.

This article is a pretty simplistic look at weight loss through calorie counting. It doesn't take into account factors that sabotage metabolism, like stress, age, menopause, and how quickly certain foods, like simple carbohydrates, are turned into sugar in the body.

I really appreciate your comment as it helps me to be more detailed based on my message, and helps us to grapple with finding the thruth so we can be better individuals. The fitness industry creates a lot of confusion and makes weight management difficult for the people grappling with it in order for them to justify selling their product or service. Some of their facts may be true but to keep it "simple" for the audience reading the article and get to the point of their struggle, It is necessary to break it down into calories in vs. calories out.

The article does take into account factors that may sabotage weight loss. For example, carbohydrates, like you mentioned, are calories - a form of energy. If you take in more calories of carbs than you expel, you will gain weight through fat because your body is storing it in your fat cells. The reverse holds true if you were to cease eating carbs, which is only a form of energy (calories), your body may lose weight if it is at a caloric deficit. The reason why we lose weight and gain weight is based on our ability to move more or less and take in more or less calories. Have you ever seen a obese zebra in the wild? Probably not because although they are constantly grazing food they are also constantly moving to avoid their predator and etc.

Stress, age, menopause and even ailments such as hyperthyroidism may affect one's ability next to someone who does not have these issue's but the same theory hods true. I have trained several people with thyroid issues and although it may have been a slower process than a 21 year old healthy individual, they still lost the weight. I have personally been stressed many times but have been able to overturn the onset of weight-loss/gain when I desired to manage my weight.

I appreciate your comments and welcome all to voice your concerns because it helps all of us find the truths and become better.

I really found the article to be a straight-forward and a comprehensive way for someone to lose or gain weight. It is based on the Laws of Thermodynamics and although one takes in energy, they have to release more energy in order to lose weight or they will have a surplus of energy (fat). Although someone has conditions that may not be advantagious compared to someone else, it still applies, even if it is slower.
