Today I heard media and political consulting cynics come out with trash-talk about Sarah Palin! They came out in droves! Who would'a thought there were so many Upset Cynics?!

The fact that Sarah Palin talks in a folksy way, winks at people, smiles a lot, and says things like, "Hi! How're ya doin'?" is upsetting a lot of political opponents all over the place.

When you think about it, her niceness can be really upsetting to some people. In fact, I think now is the time for a Very Upset Cynics Club to form right here and now, starting in the Washington DC politics and media (PM) environment, where I live. They are also needed in New York City, Chicago, and LA., for a small yet loud group.

But there are Sarah Palin admirers in DC, NYC, Chicago, and LA! There are millions who find her refreshing!

However, if where you live there is an abundance of Cynics, why not have a heart and form a Very Upset Cynics Club right in your neighborhood? By so doing, you could assure that all Upset Cynics near you, perhaps even in your neighborhood, can find a place of comfort. It's the least you can do for them, don't you think?

You see, Upset Cynics do need help. The warping of minds and hearts threatens not only mental and heart health, it threatens their ability to function until they get all that Upset Cynicism out of their systems.

Nothing threatens the Upset Cynics' health more than a friendly, smiling, folksy person, and this is something they need to be helped with. For them, it's even worse if someone is genuinely capable, happy, truthful, and popular at the same time. If that person is also a woman, well, bring in the medics. If that person is, in addition to all of that, a wife and mother, call EMT right away!

Some years ago, my husband and I thought we would move away from the metropolitan Washington DC area, where many Upset Cynics live. We thought we would move to a beautiful area on the Choptank River in eastern Maryland. All you have to do is head northeast from DC toward the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, cross the Bridge, and head toward Easton, Maryland.

In our search for a house, we became friendly with a real estate agent and were on our way to a new kind of life. One day we got to talking with the agent about the differences in life east and west of the Bay Bridge. We commented on the friendliness on the eastern side.

"Oh, we hear lots of people talking about the friendliness here," the agent said, "but you know, there are some strange reactions to our friendliness every now and then."

Our formerly Cynical Ears perked up and we said: "Tell us more, dear lady."

"Well," she continued, "There is a guy who bought a house not far from here. He came from near DC. After he moved in, he called me one day, sounding befuddled. He said that neighbors had brought cookies to his house.

"I asked him what was the problem. He said he wanted to know what the neighbors wanted from him! I told him they just wanted to be good neighbors, and that was their way of welcoming him. After a while, he began to relax. He feels right at home here now!"

That was the end of our agent's Cynical Story, but we understood its sad ramifications perfectly. We knew there are a lot of people like that man. We knew that the Cynical Web had almost got us into its sticky center once.

What this story about the lovely eastern shore of Maryland USA has to do with Sarah Palin is this: The Upset Cynical Ones of the media and of many urban centers have a problem. They cannot help it that they do not understand "Howdy, neighbor," or free cookies, or a Sarah Palin wink-and-a-smile. They cannot help it, friends.

Be patient with them. Take them some cookies. They will ignore you, but at least you have made an inroad into that diseased territory of Upset Cynicism. At least, you have started a mild relief, even if they do not understand its meaning.

Then, smile and continue your usual gentleness. Continue this over time. I cannot guarantee that it will work. Some Upset Cynics are in the terminal mode of Cynicism. However, some are capable of change. We know. We have been there. We have lived in that terrible Cynical Place.

Oh, and give them an old John Wayne movie. John Wayne would say, "Whoa, take 'er easy there, Pilgrim," and fierce, angry people would calm down. He would make other references to "Pilgrim," obviously a person or kind of person he wanted to help.

You could even send an Upset Cynic a John Wayne pilgrim mug, for daily reminders of kindness out there in the real world. The message over morning coffee might work wonders.

All Sarah Palin is doing in her own, inimitable way is sayin' "Howdy." The woman is reaching out to many up-tight pilgrims. She's such a natural, as was the "Duke," John Wayne, that I doubt she realizes it.

She is nice. Nice is the main thing that Upset Cynicals cannot imagine. Just nice. And if you are an Upset Cynic, you know what? Some nice is real. Just take it easy, and look at the Duke and Palin.

By the way, we never did move to the place we found on the Choptank River. We enjoy where we are in spite of the rampant Cynicism that gallops down the streets now and then. Our place is home. We figure that wherever we live maybe some Cynic, longing to leave Cynicism Land, will realize they are not alone.

You see, some nice really is real. Lots of folks across mainland USA, in Hawaii and way up there in Alaska know this. If you ever really, really, doubt it, Pilgrim, just think "Palin," take a deep breath, and promise yourself you'll try to respond positively next time to a new neighbor's smile and friendly hello. You don't have to become best buddies with everyone. But you might find out that many friendly people are A-OK. Yes, it's true, Pilgrim, there really is such a thing as Real Nice.

"Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle!" (Source: "Crosswalk," St. James Parish bulletin, Lothian, Maryland)

She talks that way as a gimic. She sounds awfully hatefull to me. Also not very well read or schooled. I want someone a whole lot smarter than her. Yes I'm from Chicago, I'm not cynical, I just think there's a better way than the Republicans. I don't like McCain and Palin's fear talking and negative banter.

Benjamin Franklin, in Poor Richard's Almanack, 1741, wrote:

Beauty, like supreme dominion,
Is but supported by opinion.

The quote is a form of the saying that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

Have a good day!~ Jane
