As it has been discovered that knowledge or education is extremely critical to the development of mankind, government of all nations especially the developing countries including Nigeria have been making several efforts to re-structure their dysfunctional education as an efficient and effective tool to solve the socio-economic problems of the nations. Reforms are introduced into the educational sector to address the myriads of problems affecting the attainment of educational goals and the qualities of the school products. Political instabilities, underfunding, corruption and low quality of the Nigerian graduates affect the educational system and largely influence the need for reform.

The planned attempt to reposition the educational systems of a country to allow it to be able to adequately and properly respond to the rapid changes of an increasingly globalize and technology-driven World Economy that the existing education systems cannot solve due to prevailing of the education system is what is referred to as educational reform. Educational reforms emanate from the basic conviction that considerable progress can be made in a nation by its people through careful engineering of the educational process. In reforming educational system, the structure, curriculum, management system, objectives, planning and administration may be changed or reviewed.

Nigerian educational system needs reforms in order to be able to witness the necessary innovation and changes that will make it functional. But the several educational reforms attempts taken so far in Nigeria have not been successful due to one problem or the others. Some of the problems affecting the educational reform process are: Lack/neglect of adequate, careful appropriate and comprehensive planning

Unavailability of correct and adequate data

Unprecedented financial imprudence

Human resources problem

In conducive teaching environment

Large-scale corruption

Neglect of the inspectorate services

Dampen of the educational workers morale through poor remuneration, threat of dismissal

Strike action

Insufficient availability of material resources

Exclusion of other stakeholders
