Do you have any goals in life? Do you set yourself a daily goal, a weekly goal, a monthly goal, a yearly goal or even a lifetime goal? At the age of around nineteen I was asked similar questions to these by the office manager at the company where I worked. My answer to him was that I only had one real goal in life and that it was to overcome a stammer that had been affecting my life since I was the age of four. I am happy to report that thirteen years ago, when I was aged twenty-two, I managed to achieve my lifetime goal and have been enjoying being able to speak free from the fear of stuttering ever since.
During those frustrating eighteen years when I had the stammer I often dreamed and hoped that I would one day achieve fluency. I imagined what it would be like and was very much determined to find out for real. I can honestly say that having now achieved fluency that it is even better than I had ever imagined. Overcoming the stammer was always going to be the biggest hurdle that I would ever face. At times the problems and traumas that this speech impediment caused were very difficult to cope with, but cope I did. It has made me a far stronger person than what I would have been if I had never had the stammer and I am now well placed to deal with any other issues and problems that come my way.
I am now a very content person and am the proud father of two beautiful and well behaved children. I do not require or need a fast car, a big house or fancy holidays. My kids are my life and what I earn I earn for them. I do not care what other people think of me as I believe that I am a decent person. I do not lie and I do not cheat. I am not greedy and I do not steal. If therefore people have any negative thoughts about me then they are simply wrong. I work hard and believe that I live my life in the correct manner.
Stammering has probably made me the person that I am today but I am sure happy that I now able to speak without a care in the world, in a fluent manner.
