If swollen skin, round the eyes after cold water bathing does not reduce swelling then have your GP check your eyes. Allergies and particular skin disorders can affect the eyes. As a result of fluid retention build up, puffy eyes can occur. Also, is puffy eyes heredity? Well there is no clear proof to say that it is, or is not. Eye Infections can turn real nasty if not treated. If there is a possibility of losing one`s sight it is imperative that eye treatment is sought after immediately. Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva resulting in dilatation of the conjunctival blood vessels causing the eye to appear red. Inflammation may be limited to the conjunctiva (primary conjunctivitis) or may occur secondary to diseases affecting other parts of the eye e.g. iritis. Conjunctivae are the mucous membranes which cover the white of the eyes and the inner side of the eyelids.

Normally it occurs in both eyes; nevertheless it can start in one eye and spread to the other. It can also affect one eye more than the other. Conjunctivitis is not a serious threat to a person`s health, and is treatable; however not reason enough for ignoring the problem. As with most conditions - whether in relation to the eyes or not - normally come in different types, and with Conjunctivitis there are 5 sorts with their own separate causes.

Bacterial conjunctivitis is caused by the bacteria calledstaphylococci, streptococci or haemophilus. This type infection happens in both eyelids. Symptoms have you feel grittiness and a show of sticky discharge, eyes also redden. Not a pretty sight to see i.e. eyelids stuck together with a gooey matter. Bathing the eyes with GP authorized treatments for removal of sticky discharge adhering to the lashes is the safest way to treat your eyes. Inappropriate eye solutions can be dangerous. Towels or tissues used for this purpose should be boiled washed or discarded after coming in contact with the infected eyes. Conjunctivitis is contagious and can speedily spread.

Broad spectrum antibiotic drops or ointment (chloramphenicol or fusidic acid) is the more recognized prescriptive medication for treating Bacterial conjunctivitis. Because the eyes are sensitive and of a delicate nature - when nursing them keep this in mind and use soft materials along with gentle touching, this will prevent further problems rising. Clean infected eyes with cotton wool soaked in cooled boiled water to remove debris and stickiness. Study states while 64 per cent of cases clear on their own in a matter of days, antibiotic eye medication does lead to increased cure rates and earlier remission.

If you see no change in your condition despite treatment then it is of the utmost importance to let your doctor know that you are not healing. If your symptoms worsen or if the vision deteriorates then take a trip back to your GP to examine the infected eyes so he or she may up dosage or change treatment or do further tests.

Things you can do to help avoid conjunctivitis or spreading it?

Thoroughly clean hands and face. Do not share face flannels or towels, keep one solely for the patient only. Avoid rubbing infected eyes. Crusted discharge should be removed by bathing the eyes with lukewarm salt water which helps reduce the symptoms. Use soft paper tissues/hankies to gently dab dry the eyes and then dispose. This stops contamination. Discard antibiotic eye drops after treatment course has ended.

Healthy eye tips

  • Have your eyes checked annually
  • Wear quality contact lenses
  • Wear sunglasses out in the sun
  • Eat healthy foods
  • Use bright lighting for reading
  • Rest your eyes whenever possible and avoid straining them

Puffy eyes if not caused through infection, will after time and a little tlc, heal, however eye infections that cause pain discomfort and the more severe i.e. blindness can never really be healed.
