There are many types of skin problems that affect people around the world but the most common is acne and while it may seem to be a teenage condition, it would be a mistake to believe that adults cannot suffer with it as well.

While it is true that acne will often become apparent during the formative years, many people do in fact find it a temporary condition although as many as nine in every ten people will suffer with at some point in their lives.

Our sebaceous glands produce oil called sebum which fouls up the hair follicles and contributes to acne but this is not the only substance responsible. Acne is the result of the sebum in the pores and not the skin itself although the condition does seem to be a modern problem and not something we have always had to live with.

Among the many causes of clogged pores are the use of makeup, everyday air particles and often a simple case of hormonal changes but while acne is a part of life for many individuals, it can be effectively treated. Other factors can be responsible to, like the consumption of too much junk and reprocessed food, which is high in unhealthy sugars.

More persistent cases of acne will probably need stronger medication which can be prescribed by a dermatologist. When medication is prescribed, normally the doctor involved will want to see the patient to ensure the acne is clearing according to plan and decide whether to use more extreme methods.

The person suffering with acne must remember not to scratch at or attempt to remove and pimples as any bacteria carried beneath the nails could cause further infection.

Germs and bacteria are not normally seen by the naked eye so just because the fingernails look clean does not actually mean they are. This is why an acne sufferer should avoid any direct contact between their hand and the blemished area.

The chances of perfect skin are virtually zero and you are more likely to suffer with acne if your parents also had the condition. In the vast majority of acne cases though, it is caused by the transition from a child to an adult and the changes that take place during this period.

While opinions vary on the subject, it cannot hurt to contact a dermatologist if you are having a problem with acne or other skin complaint. The information here is not designed to replace the advice given by a doctor, dermatologist or other medical professional.
