I know, I know. The economy is bad enough to have to celebrate a second holiday in one week. Sweetest Day does not have to be a day of spending endless cash.

It is true that many Americans believe the Oct. 18 holiday is a concocted holiday made up by card makers and florist. Why not take the time to show those you love that you do appreciate them or pardon the pun-are sweet on them.

These last few months have been a trying time for many families. Celebrating Sweetest Day may be exactly what the doctor ordered in this situation. Why not get the family together and enjoy the day with these low cost alternatives.

Go to the park
Pack the Frisbee, fishing poles, volleyball or whatever your family loves to do together and hit the local park. Be sure to jump on the swing yourself and let your worries fly away as the wind hits your hair. Have contests to see who can swing the highest. Make a day out of it and pack a picnic lunch. Just enjoy one another and talk with one another.

Pumpkin Patch
Pumpkin Patches are a staple of October. Go take some pics with the ones you love surrounded by pumpkins. Carve or paint a heart on the pumpkin. Some patches offer hayrides and bonfires. Pack some marshmallows and enjoy the fun! If you and your spouse are looking for some adventure on Sweetest Day, go roll around in the hay or bake a pumpkin pie together!

Candlelight dinner
Romance your spouse with a nice, romantic dinner at home. Anyone can do a pasta dinner for a reasonable cost. Light some candles and put on some sweet music. Poof, a romantic night is set. Be sure to include some dancing!

Fall Walk
Fall is such a beautiful season. It is perfect timing for Sweetest Day. Go for a walk with your spouse and really talk to one another. This includes listening to one another. Enjoy the colors of the leaves and the cool air.

Breakfast in Bed
Breakfast is probably one of the cheapest meals to make for a family. Get out the waffle maker or make some heart-shaped pancakes for a surprise breakfast in bed. Be sure to include some great seasonal fruit. Your spouse will love the thought of not having to the same cereal for breakfast and feel honored that you went to so much trouble.

These are just a few ideas. Get creative this year! Celebrate the day just as a chance to tell those you love that you still are there caring for them day in and day out. Life is short. No, we don't need a holiday to show our families we care, but why not take advantage when we do have one.
