The only thing that speaks to us when we are all alone is our Conscience. Conscience is a gift from God. A clear conscience is always a true friend of us who speaks the truth and shows the things, which are good. That may be my own views. But we need to know what the psychologists speak about or define conscience.

What is Conscience? The experts say -

A sense of right & wrong. Conscience is the capacity for moral judgment. An inerrant knowledge of the need to do what is right and avoid wrong. Some advanced studies define conscience as, Conscience is the faculty of the mind, or inborn sense of right and wrong, by which we judge of the moral character of human conduct.

Functions of conscience

It is very important to know what this conscience does. God has given each one of us a conscience because of its multi facet functions, which are as follows:

i. It Strikes or Convicts: - When we do something wrong, our conscience strikes us, bothers us, troubles us (1 Sam. 24: 5; 2 Sam. 24:10). In john 8: 9 we find that conscience also convicts of our faults or what we did.
ii. It Reproaches: - The conscience also reproaches, when we are at fault (Job. 27: 6)
iii. It Confirms (the Truth in us): - Our conscience confirms that we are telling the truth in the Holy Spirit (Rom. 9: 1).
iv. It Testifies: - The conscience testifies that we have done the work in the holiness and sincerity that are from God (2 Cor. 1: 12). Rom. 2: 15 says that the conscience bears witness.
v. It gives the believer an Upper Hand: - The conscience puts the believer in an advantageous position or place (1 Pet. 3: 16). See also an example in Gen. 20:5, 6, where God testifies for the king Abimelech. The king Abimelech got an upper hand over Abraham and his wife because of his clear conscience (integrity of his heart).

Maintaining a Clear Conscience

Our Conscience can be affected negatively. It can get polluted anytime in this gloomy world. It can be corrupted with worldly desires. Hence we need to clean it everyday and every moment. Otherwise it will stop talking to us, as a result of which we will be led to destruction and despair. That is why, St. Paul says in Acts 24:16 that, I STRIVE always to keep my conscience clear before God and man. The great King David says in Ps. 51:10 that, CREATE in me a CLEAN HEART oh Lord!

Therefore, we need to long for maintaining a clean heart that is conscience. But how is that possible?
Its is possible only
1. By maintaining / holding fast to the RIGHTEOUSNESS (Job. 27:6).
2. By keeping FAITH / holding unto FAITH (1 Tim. 1:19 & 3: 9).
3. By the RESURRECTION of Jesus Christ (Heb. 10: 22 & 9: 14; 1 Pet. 3:21).
4. By the PRAYER of other believers (Heb. 13:18).

So, dear friends! Let us strive like apostle Paul to keep our conscience clear before God and men.

Great article, T.C. A conscience can be a good thing--especially when it guides you to do right and follow what is right and good in God's eyes.

Thanks for sharing this with us.

Hey TC,

Thank you so much for the article. A great reminder of how we should present oursevles daily. I, as King David, also understand how important it is to have a clean heart, and a clear conscience that we may be found righteous before God.

An excellent article. I think you struck a cord missing in todays society. How do we do the works we do or don't even while professing? It has to get down to the basics. Just what is permissible for us? What we chose to ignore or make light of. How we can look the other way, exploit, take advantage of lie, distort, etc and yet come as light.
