Protein is important in our diet because of its varied roles. Besides helping to supply a source of energy, protein is critical for cell repair, the building of muscle and bone, and controlling metabolic processes. Protein intake is critical to supply the body with all of the essential amino acids needed to maintain and produce energy.

Athletes, body builders, and extremely active individuals require additional sources of protein in order to achieve and maintain the energy levels required by their activities. Protein has always been an important ingredient in the athlete’s or bodybuilder’s regimen designed specifically to create a strong, lean, and masterful physique.

In particular, branched chain amino acids are provided by whey protein. Since the body directly uses these during arduous workouts, it is important to replace them as soon as possible. Taking whey protein supplements will accomplish this.

Whey protein, a high quality, nutritious protein, is important to our diet and to our overall good health. It contains many of the amino acids that are essential in our daily lives for good health. Whey protein is found in cow’s milk. It is removed during the cheese making process and made into powder form.

The purest form available is whey protein isolate. Not only is this product high in amino acid concentration, but, also, it is low in fat and cholesterol. Due to its purity as a protein, the body absorbs it quickly and effectively delivers nutrients to the muscles and other body tissues. This is particularly why it is found in many protein supplements used for medical purposes. Vegetarians who include dairy products in their diets may find supplements that include whey protein a beneficial way to include protein in their diet.

Taking a whey protein supplement can enable you to lose weight. Many products, whose purpose is geared to weight loss or control, contain whey protein. Ingesting whey protein will help to create a feeling of fullness that will curb eating. Studies have indicated that combining a diet high in protein intake along with an exercise regimen leads to leaner muscle tissue, a higher metabolic rate, and less fat. A higher metabolic rate will lead to a greater number of calories burning naturally.

Protein and the essential amino acids that it provides offer other benefits to the individuals who ingest them. In particular, they assist in maintaining healthy skin, nails, muscles, and other body tissues. Protein is important to the general wellness of all individuals, as well as, their immune systems.

A very low percentage, one percent, of milk is whey protein therefore, drinking milk is not a sufficient source of protein. Whey protein is available in many other food products, particularly beef, fish, and chicken. However, only whey protein can boast low fat and low cholesterol content. Although it is important to eat a variety of foods, it is recommended to include whey protein in the diet for optimal effect.

Although the amount of protein needed per person varies, the fact remains that protein intake is important. Athletes and other active people should probably double the protein intake of less active individuals.

Whey protein products are quite popular. Therefore, they are readily found online and at any store that specializes in supplements. The supplements are also available in flavored varieties.

No documented side effects exist except for reactions due to dairy allergies. People with lactose intolerant systems should refrain from taking products that contain whey protein, with the exception of the whey protein isolate. However, as with any supplement, it is important to consult with your physician prior to incorporating whey protein supplements in your diet. Research studies are still needed to further explore the benefits of whey protein supplements.
