Pickup truck tonneau covers protect cargo from theft and from weather too. But there's more. A cover also makes your truck bed a cleaner shape which may improve fuel mileage. But different tonneau designs are better for different purposes and a cover is a lot more than just looks. Here are tips for choosing the best truck bed covers.

What's Your Cargo?

Tilting hard covers look sleek and racy, but don't get on if you're hauling tall cargo. And tall cargo is anything higher than the side of the truck bed, like a lawn mower for example. See you can't close the tilting cover with a tall cargo. So for hauling taller items, choose a roll up cover or a retractable tonneau cover or even a tri-fold cover. Choose a tile forward cover for looks, but not for hauling.

Does The Cargo Need To Be Locked?

Any cover, including soft covers, help with security since the cargo is out of sight of prying eyes. But a thief can easily get into a soft cover. A sharp knife will do the trick. Not so with a lockable hard cover. The best hard covers when combined with a locking tailgate create a giant trunk that only a determined thief will break in.

Does Looks Matter?

It's amazing how even a cheap tonneau cover finishes the look of a pickup bed. The cheapest covers come in several designs so you can get the look you want for just a small price. For the ultimate look, the hard tonneau covers are the way to go. A retractable tonneau cover is most often aluminum coated with a powder coat for a sleek custom look. The real custom look is a tilting cover painted to match the body color.

Choose a pickup cover based on how you'll use your truck. The best looking covers won't look so good if you can't use your truck with the cover on. Security counts too so pick a hard cover for real locked security. It's amazing how a cheap tonneau cover dresses up a truck and makes it more useful at just a small price.
