If you have an invite to a fancy dress party this Christmas then if I were you I wouldn't give it a second thought about going. If there is little apprehension about attending then why not organize a fancy dress party for your own circle of family and friends. Celebrating an occasion and especially Christmas this way will add more fun to the fun. It`s surprisingly cheap and time saving to have a party of this kind, how you may well ask.

Let us say your invite was for an average Christmas party it would be all systems go, meaning, having to worry yourself witless over what to wear, the hair style to have or what colour eye shadow for the eyelids. Then on top of that there`s having to traipse the streets in and out of crowded busy shops to find what you're looking for - with no guarantee of ever finding it, not to mention the wear and tear on shoe leather and painful aching feet which makes the idea of having a fancy dress party more appealing. The pluses of fancy dress are, once you have established your character then it is just a matter of visiting the "one" shop to purchase the costume. If you wish to make your own fancy dress costume then this is just as easy because you know exactly what you want when you go shopping. An invitation to an average party has you constantly visualizing and conjuring up images of how you think you will look, whereas with fancy dress you only need to look at a picture of your chosen character and know how you will look.

So you have decided that you would like to host a fancy dress party and you are not sure what is involved. Well worry not as long as you are prepared to plan ahead this will give you time to get everything right. Having said that, there is not much for you to get right. If you tend on having a particular theme then of course your guests will have to be informed of this by invitation. Make sure you have invites on your to-do-list. Another thing as host is to provide the group with food drink and entertainment, other from that nothing more of importance to add only that of your presence.

A running buffet is more suitable for a fancy dress party than a sit down meal. This makes sense because of how your guests will come dressed. For instance if we have Cinderella fully gowned sit alongside Henry Viii, will there be room for Snow White and Seven Dwarfs, get my gist. Your fancy dress party should be about "you" taking every ones breath away with the costume you wear. Choose wisely and confidently and you are sure to impress in your fancy dress.

Some Fancy dress costume ideas below.

  • Ragdoll
  • Angel
  • Mermaid
  • Pirate
  • Elvis Presley
  • Cowboy
  • Vampire
  • Sports Hero
  • Fairy Godmother
  • Witch
  • Cavalier
  • Wench
  • Nun
  • Monk
  • Grim Reaper
  • Indian
  • Robin Hood
  • Maid Marion
If your fancy dress party is to be a themed one then consider a Xmas theme. Other options up for consideration are Gothic - Georgian - Medieval - 70's Era - Star Trek - Walt Disney. This list is on-going. If you celebrate on a budget and hiring a fancy dress costume is out of the question then make your own. It is simple, easy, and fun to make your own fancy dress costume even when money is tight and times are hard. Here are some great ideas for low cost

1. Fairy Godmother

Go along to a second hand shop and pick up a party dress. Look for a cheap tiara and wand (or make) from a car boot sale. These are inexpensive items and can be purchased from costume supplies stores. Fairy wings can also be added, either purchased or handmade out of cardboard and glittering spray paint.

2 Ragdoll

Very simple and an effective costume to make is the ragdoll. Clothes can be salvaged from the back of the closet or charity shop. For the wig gather together red (color of your choice) yarn, cut short in the front for long bangs. Paint the face heavy i.e. coat lips thick with scarlet lipstick - heavily rouge the cheeks resembling that of coco the clown. Look for polka dot patterned material, noted with the rage doll.

3. Cowboy

Hats are ten a penny in second hand shops so try and find one nearest to what looks like a Stetson. A bowler hat if you tend on dressing as a western banker. The rest of the outfit can likely be found in the wardrobe! Use a button down shirt (check pattern is ideal), a vest, a pair of jeans, and some boots for the ensemble. Add a red bandana tied around the neck. Leave stubble on the chin if you are man to set off the look. You can make your own beard or moustache with colored cotton wool or whiskers can be drawn on.

4. Vampire

Cheap and easy to make. A white shirt and black pants are the only clothes required for a vampire. A cape if you want like Dracula can be made out of a bin bag liner. Purchase vampire teeth and the outfit are done! Of course the face will have to be made up to give the costume the finishing edge, For makeup, use white powder on the face, dark eyeliner around the eyes, and red lipstick. Slick and gel hair back - do not dye your hair for this purpose, consider looking for a wig.

If the budget stretches to all invited then the theme on their invitation should say come along in your birthday suit as birthday boy and birthday girl even though it is Christmas. You won`t get cheaper outfits than these..
