Contrary to popular belief, ringworm is not some insect, worm or creepy crawly bug that travels over your skin. Ringworm is also called tinea and is not something crawling on your skin. It is a fungus but tinea means growing ring to describe the rash itself. Additional words are added to show the location of the ringworm. For instance, if it is on the scalp, it is tinea capitis. For ringworn that is on the body, it's called tinea corporis. When ringworm is on the face it's called tinea faciei.
Ringworm treatment is important because certain forms of it such as scalp ringworm can lead to hair loss that is permanent in that area. Ringworm can be transmitted by personal contact, contact with animals who suffer from it or picked up from soil. The FDA, food and drug administration, in 2007 approved Lamisil for the treatment of tinea capitis, scalp ringworm, for children aged 4 or more.
If you know someone that has it, avoid skin to skin contact as well as sharing items such as bedding and towels. Some people bring their own sheets and towels to motels to avoid both scabies and ringworm if they are unsure of the quality of the facility.
For ringworm treatment, the most common approach is through topical solutions that can usually clear up the fungus in a 2 week time period. Ringworm treatment in topical solutions usually ontains one of the following ingredients: terbinafine, clotrimazole, ketoconazole or miconazole.
Some of the antifungal medicine that can be bought over the counter are the clotrimazole. This cream or lotion is applied directly to the infected skin area two times a day over a two to eight week period. Another antifungal medicine is miconazole which is an antifungal medicine used to treat athlete's foot. Athlete's foot can be spread around locker rooms and of course in direct contact sports as well. Miconazole can be in the form of powder, lotion, and cream and spray liquid that is applies to the area with the fungus . It used only once a day for two weeks. If the fungus does not respond to topical creams, there are also oral medications that can help treat ringworm such as the antifungal tablet Fulvicin which contains griseofulvin. I get tinea versicolor on my back every year in summer and it will usually respond topically but at times I've needed to take oral medication to control it. Ringworm treatment will clear up the fungus and get you back on track again. Be aware of the contagious factor to prevent a back and forth situation with friends or family members. It can be a pingpong situation and you don't want that to happen.
