The only accessories you really need are the Wii remotes and the Nunchuks. The wiimotes and the Nunchucks work for almost all of the Wii games. So, besides having enough for everyone to play, there is really no need for any other accessories. When adding more remote controllers to your accessories, why not buy a Wii Play game ... because it comes with a free wiimote and is a great value.
Just how many controllers are available? There are really only 4 Wii Controllers: the Wiimote, the Nunchuk, the Classic Controller, and the Wii Fit Balance Board. Anything else besides those four are called shells ... hollow pieces of plastic used to change the look of the controller or provide a different style of grip to the real controllers which latch into them. Shells are like the Wii tennis racket, Wii wheel, Wii zapper for example.
At the bare minimum you do need at least one Wiimote and one Nunchuk. The Wii console comes with one of each at the time of purchasing a new Wii system. To have the max number of players, you will need to buy up to three more of each. To help differentiate who's is who's controller in the house, you might want to check out some cool skins ... designed that way and to protect the Wii from wear and tear. I enjoy knowing which remote is mine.
Wiimote / remote controllers use AA batteries ... your crazy if you aren't using rechargeable batteries, or better yet (what I use) a charging station. The Wii charger provides a dock for your Wiimote; you won't have to constantly replace the batteries. Since the charging station is an affordable Nintendo Wii accessory it pays for itself in a short period of time.
