Community helpers is an exciting theme for preschoolers as they get to pretend to be grown-ups as well as learn more about individuals that help them.

If your school can do so, it is beneficial during this week to invite community helpers into the classroom. Nurses, doctors and dentists all enjoy coming into classes to share their expertise as well as often times offer free products to your kids.

It is important for preschoolers to realize the role these community helpers provide for our community. As a teacher, preschoolers can learn this by well-planned activities throughout the classroom. Here are a few activities for your preschool centers while discussing community helpers with an emphasis on the medical fields of doctors and dentists.

Art
Toothbrush painting-Print out a clip art tooth on yellow paper. Allow the children to brush the tooth by using a toothbrush and dipping it in white paint. The kids will love brushing their pretend tooth. Talk about the importance of brushing teeth to get them clean.

Make a medical kit-cut out medical bags out of black construction paper. If you have extra time, glue a white box with a red cross. Then allow the kids to stick band-aids, glue cotton swabs, gauze and tongue compressors to the paper. Talk about how doctors use these items.

Homeliving
This center will most likely be the most popular center this week. Who doesn't like dressing up like a doctors and dentists. Allow the kids to place band-aids on boo boos on your dolls. Be sure to place toy medical kits in the center and allow the children to listen to heartbeats.

Music
Sung to the tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat
Brush, brush, brush your teeth
At least two times a day
Cleaning, cleaning, cleaning, cleaning
Fighting tooth decay

Floss, floss, floss your teeth
Gently around your gums
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily
Flossing can be fun.

Rinse, rinse, rinse your teeth.
Keep them clean and bright.
They'll be healthy, they'll be strong
If you treat them right.

Blocks
Allow the kids to build a hospital using white blocks. This can be done by wrapping your blocks or boxes in white butcher paper. Put community helper action figures in the block area. You can also place ambulances in the block area.

These are just a few suggestions. Feel free to add more in the comment section below.
