What a bum ache the rectal itch and especially more so if you have the need to scrawb while in company. Scrawb is used instead of scratch because of its fierceness, it`s the best word for describing what a rectal itch can have you do. An itchy bum is not an issue of seriousness; however, although not life threatening, it can from dirty fingernails after scratching cause infection.

It is a common condition that acts up more at night. Anal itching is likely spurred on by warmth and because of this the skin is easily irritated and open to inflammation. The anus is awkward to get at but you have to find a way to keep it clean and dry; anal skin is crinkly and traps faeces particles. It is a body part sweaty and airless most of the time; it can moisten from anal or vaginal discharge. Scratching is not healthy and can damage the skin; however it is easier said than done trying to evade the action. It`s also unhygienic to scratch inside the crack of your bottom with your fingers, however you must not use an object.

Particular ointments can dampen the area which is not good. Bathe the anus cleaner than clean to rid missed or leaking faeces clinging to anal hair. Faeces are made of water, bits of food that could not be digested, and dead cells from the lining of the intestines and dead bacteria - all the solids that the body has no more need for. Faeces show brown because of bile from the liver, but darken through iron and pigments in foods and red wine. If the anal itch urges you to tear at the skin or there is anal pains see your GP. Causes of anal itching come varied. Washing too much or not enough can be reason. Poor hygiene can be responsible for anal itching, but so can excessive cleaning. Harsh soaps are not good. To freshen and clean the bum needs no more than mild soap and warm water. Although pre-moistened toilet tissues feel great and convenient, they also may cause anal itching if scented and maybe contain alcohol or particular preservatives. This applies to bubble bath/foams.

We recognize creams for healing but they are widely responsible for the rectal itch. If you experience itching, it is a natural to want to treat with anesthetic gel but most are ‘for haemorrhoids' and contain lignocaine, tetracaine, cinchocaine, pramocaine or benzocaine with other ingredients. They do help, but not a 100% guarantee in keeping the itch away forever so a waste of time and money.  Ask your doctor for advice or pharmacist.

Psoriasis and eczema can affect anal skin. Piles are known for itch partly due to the slimy discharge they create. Some people are more susceptible to suffering from piles than others and may inherit genetic likelihood of hemorrhoid occurrence. Symptoms of piles include pain after a bowel movement and seeing specks of blood. In the more serious case of piles, a blood clot can form in an exterior pile, causing a stroke. If blood is seen in passed stools, your doctor may do a colonoscopy or rectal examination with a camera to check for internal bleeding caused by polyps rather than piles. Black stool or excessive gushing of blood may not be caused by hemorrhoids but can be caused by internal bleeding or can signify intestinal or colon cancer.

There are many causes behind itchy bottoms and one duly related to this condition falls on fungal issues, Fungal infections, alike to thrush or athlete's foot cause itch. Fungi wollow in warmth and found round the anus after a person has profusely scratched leaving damaged skin, this then allows fungi to take hold and every possibility of it worsening the problem. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are not usually reason as people believe. Still not to be ruled out because one never knows what can happen during an infection period.

  • Genital warts (vulva or penis) caused by papillomavirus, flourish in warm moist locations. Because of nearness to the anus it can give reason to itch. as with Genital herpes.

Threadworms (pinworms) are tiny - about 13 mm long and found in the lower part of the bowel. These are not rare in fact it is estimated that 40 million people in America suffer them. The female worms leave the anus at night and lay her eggs on anus skin causing severe itching at night for the patient. Hygiene should prevail to the highest standard because, when you scratch the eggs stick under your fingernails; can see where we are going with this. If the fingernails are not rid of the eggs these can then be transported into your mouth and infest the gut.

Sometimes it has a lot to do with the foods you eat. You only have to think spicy food and what springs to mind; yes you got it in one (the dodgy stomach and long stay endless visits to the bathroom.) Specific foods irritate the anus during defecation. Beer and curry are evident examples. Some people find their body upsets when eating citrus fruits, grapes, tomatoes, coffee or drinking tea. Anxiety is another cause for anal itching. If this is the case then we should all be walking round scratching our bums because of the stress we are under at times, Anxiety makes the brain hyper-alert to body emotions that we may otherwise be able to ignore.

Ways to prevent and relieve

  • Bathe the anus after opening your bowels using unscented soap and water. You can try using aqueous cream as a cleanser but get medical advice first.
  • Make sure the anus is always dry if possible and airy.
  • Avoid bathroom smellies in your bath and instead add a cup of salt.
  • Keep a cotton-wool ball, dusted with powder, against the anus, inside your underwear. Use unscented baby talc.
  • Wear loose underwear. Avoid tights and elastic knickers/underpants because they encourage sweating. Avoid anything that keeps the buttocks close together.
  • Do not use biological (enzyme) laundry detergents, or perfumed fabric softeners. Instead use detergents for sensitive skin.
  • If the urge to scratch is strong, try pinching the skin between your thumb and forefinger; this is less damaging than actual scratching.
  • Do not rub Vaseline around the anus. Greasy creams keep the skin soggy.
  • Be aware of what steroid creams are about. In Britain, you can purchase a weak steroid cream (containing hydrocortisone 1% or less.) Steroid cream reduces inflammation and eases itching for a short period, in the long-term it can thin the skin. Seek advice before using steroid cream.
  • Old fashioned or not if it works, try it that is as long as it is familiar (witch hazel.) Dab it on twice daily, however if your condition changes for the worse then stop treatment.
They say the inside of a banana skin relives anal itching, how much truth there is in this would have to be determined by the user, once again seek advice. Avoid foods that cause excessive flatulence. If your discomfort is mainly throughout the night take antihistamine. Antihistamines relieve itching but can make you drowsy. If nothing is helping it may be suggested you be referred to a specialist for injection of a chemical called Methylene blue into the anal area. Rectal itching can happen from a yeast infection so try rubbing plain yogurt on the area to soothe.  If your condition gets no better see your GP because it`s embarrassing having to walk around like a penguin because you are in company.
