It's a trend that's expected to keep making waves in the foreseeable future. Not only are gold values at an all-time high, it's experiencing a Renaissance in the fashion world as well. While many are turning to gold investments during the economic downturn, it's also making a flashy appearance on runways from Paris to London to Milan. From metallic couture to gold jewelry, the king of metals is expected to continue to be in demand in 2009.

According to a World Gold Council spokesperson, "The Renaissance of gold in the fashion world shows no signs of slowing down. With the increasing value of gold, coupled with the economic concerns, gold has become a meaningful and safe investment for any jewelry wardrobe."

Versace, Dior, and Donna Karan are just a few of the designers who have taken their inspiration from gold, adorning their models with the chunky pieces, statement earrings, fabulous cuffs and the season's must-have look, the pendant necklace. "Only gold can complement every skin tone and every color under the sun," said the World of God representative. Fashion designers Vera Wang and Diane von Furstenerg prove this by their use of laminated linen, gold applications, and other glittering touches in their clothing lines.

Purchasing Gold

While gold is experiencing a Renaissance, it never really goes out of style. Investing in a few solid pieces may bolster both your appearance and portfolio. It is a wearer-friendly metal and in its purest state won't tarnish. While some may have an allergic reaction or staining problems with metals that are combined with gold, in and of itself, gold is rarely a problem.

The malleability of gold has long made it a favorite with artisans. As it can be worked into nearly any shape, gold provides an endless array of possibilities. In fact, one ounce of gold can be hammered into a very thin 10-foot square. When choosing gold jewelry, keep the following tips in mind:

1. Pure gold is marked 24K. Gold that contains 18 parts gold and six parts of additional metals is 18K, or 75 percent gold. 14K gold contains 14 parts gold and 10 parts of additional metals, making it 58.5 percent gold, and so on.

2. Gold jewelry from Europe is marked differently. For instance, 18K gold is marked with a 750 which indicates 75 percent; 14K is marked 585 for 58.5 percent.

3. Gold jewelry should contain a karat marking as well as a hallmark or trademark identifying its maker.

4. To add durability (pure gold is soft and impractical for daily wear) and lower the cost, gold is mixed with other metals: White gold is created by combining gold with nickel or palladium. Copper mixed with gold produces a rose or pink tint.

5. A piece of jewelry which has been gold-coated reduces its value. The thicker the layer of gold, the less likely it is to wear away quickly.

6. For those with allergies to nickel or other metals, choose 18K or 22K gold.

7. Gold-plated or gold-filled jewelry is suitable for occasional wear. Everyday will quickly diminish the gold layer and expose the metal below.

The Care of Gold

Gold may be quite durable, but some care should be taken when it comes to cleaning. Avoid the use of harsh abrasives or household cleaners which contains chemicals which can weaken or damage gold jewelry. A gentle cleansing solution, such as a gold cleaning liquid or dish soap mixed with warm water are safe for cleaning gold. Follow up with a lint-free cloth for drying as opposed to paper towels which can scratch gold surfaces. The number one enemy of gold's alloys is chlorine. Make sure to take off all gold pieces before entering a pool or Jacuzzi.

Proper storage of gold jewelry will maintain its luster. Pieces should be stored separately in a jewelry box or lint-free cloth when not being worn. Storing jewelry separately also helps to prevent scratching and tangling.
