If you live in the UK and are looking for a builder, how can you ensure you employ a good builder who is competent and trustworthy? Finding builders or tradesmen is generally quite easy. You can find a number of trades and craftsmen like electricians, plumber's roofers in local papers or the yellow pages or on the internet. But a list of companies is just not enough. Because builders have a bad reputation it is important to find a company that isn't likely to turn up on one of the television programs exposed as a poor con artist. The trouble is, anyone can set them self up as a builder so finding a seasoned expert rather than an ex window cleaner should be foremost in your mind. You also want a company that can accommodate you budge and do a professional job.

To save you from the stress of hiring dodgy builders it is worth doing a small bit of detective work on local companies. Personal recommendation is the best way of finding someone reliable. If someone you know had building work done and were happy with the work then your search could be over. When a company has pride in its work they will want to do the best job possible for you so that you do recommend them to friends and family. In today's climate some builders are having a tough time finding work, but good hardworking skilled tradesmen will always be in work.

Most reputable companies with have a website so you need to know how to tell the genuine builder websites from the cowboys. How? Well a genuine builder will have nothing to hide. As well as phone numbers and email addresses to contact them, a genuine builder with have his address on show. They will have pictures and testimonials of past work showcasing their skills. If this doesn't still doesn't give you the confidence, why not go that extra step and go and visit some of the work they have done. A genuine builder will have no problem about you wanting to see his work and will happily give you some contact details and addresses. You could also look on the companieshouse website to find information on the building company.

Another quality you should look for is builders who are polite, friendly, understanding and adaptable. If you have done some detective work and narrowed your search down you should get a feel of them by phoning them and getting them out to do some quotes. Instincts are unusual right. If one company gave you a slightly higher quote but you had a good feel' about them, show them your lowest quote and ask them to try to match it.

All in all there are good builders out there, it just a case of finding the good ones from the bad ones. If you follow all of the above you should be able to find yourself a reliable builder that will do the job well for a reasonable price.
