Incorporating holidays into story and circle time can be challenging at times. Valentine's Day can be such an exciting time for kids and incorporating it into music time can be a cause for celebration.
Kids love music time and through song can extend their knowledge of the holiday. It doesn't have to be a complex part of your lesson. Pull out the instruments, shakers, etc. and put on some romance music to dance to during class.
Older kids can also learn basic dance steps to dance with their parents during the class party. Here are a few Valentine songs that my class has done over the years if teaching dance is not your cup of tea.
I'm a Little Valentine sung to the tune of I'm A Little Teapot
I'm a little Valentine,
Red and white, with ribbons and lace,
I'm a beautiful sight.
I can say I love you
On Valentine's Day
Just put me in an envelope and give me away.
The next two are to the tune of Mary Had A Little Lamb
Friend of Mine
You're a special friend of mine,
Friend of mine, friend of mine.
You're a special friend of mine,
Please be my Valentine.
Hug From You
It's nice to get a hug from you,
Hug from you, Hug from you,
It's nice to get a hug from you,
So, let's give one right now.
Ten pretty Valentines sung to the tune of Ten Little Indians
One pretty, two pretty, three pretty valentines;
Four pretty, five pretty six pretty valentines;
Seven pretty, eight pretty, nine pretty valentines;
Ten pretty valentines!
What is great about these songs is that you can use props to make them come alive during music time. You can have an oversized Valentine card with the first song that you put in and envelope. On the second song, be sure to point to the kids in the class. On the third one, give the kids hugs. The last one, have numbered hearts or valentines so the kids can get the visual recognition of the numbers.
These are just a few songs and suggestions. I am not sure who wrote them, but were passed to me by another teacher years ago. If you have a favorite song, please feel free to share it in the comment section below.
