The Consumer Protection Act has been enacted to protect the interest of a consumer of goods & services. Its objective is to provide a simple ,speedy and inexpensive way towards redressal of grievances in case of any deficiency/defect in goods and services bought/used by him for a consideration.

Who is a Consumer : A consumer can be a consumer for goods or consumer for services.A consumer is one who buys some goods for consideration for his use or one who uses such goods with approval of such buyer. The buyer who buys goods and uses the same for commercial purpose can not claim protection under the Act. But a consumer of services even if he
utilises it for commercial purpose can be safeguarded by the act.

OBJECTIVE : The sole purpose of the act is to protect the interest of common consumers purchasing goods for their own consumption.

IMPORTANCE : The requirement and effectiveness of CPA are enormous Particularly In internet marketing. The consumer purchase goods or services through image on the screen and trust the specification cited by the vender. The buyer can not have physical access to the commodity before getting delivery. Now,in case the goods/services are not in conformity with the specification, protection may be provided to the buyer through establishment of special
court and by introduction of special legislation under CPA.

NEEDS TO CHANGE BUSINESS PATTERN : In future internet marketing will have to be encouraged at any cost. The Population of every country has been increasing day by day. So,every country has been suffering from space constraint particularly commercial purposes in cities and urban areas. There is no need of showroom or display counter in internet marketing. The offer of a vender can be displayed to masses over a wide geographical area within shortest span of time.By virtue of e-marketing trade and commerce will get greatest exposure.

REMEDIAL MEASURES : In order to provide legal protection to the e-consumer of goods and services, an on-line judicial system should be established.one can file writ, appeal other petitions on line and copies of the orders can be obtained electronically. This process will expedite justice and more and more e-consumers will get confidence to paperless trading evidently this may be boom in internet marketing.

WEAKNESSEs: But,this act has lost its effectiveness in most of the third world countries due to intervention of existing indigeneous lacunae in systems and procedures. The implementing authority must be serious in infusing the act to its right spirit and boost up the e-commerce to its summit which it truly deserves.

With best regards
