Tell anyone over 30 to create a Myspace profile and they migh say "Nah, thanks. Im already married and dont want to interact with teens and young adults." I then ask: Have you seen how many advertisers are on Myspace.com?
If youre into Internet Marketing at all or if you want to get free exposure for yourself, your product and service, you need to overcome the idea that Myspace.com is only a hang out for teenagers. Its more than that or it wouldnt have sold for for $580M! Think about it. The new owners, in my opinion, are not interested in investing all that money just to entertain your teenage son or daughter with free profiles!
Myspace.com is a social network environment where you can easily create your own profile, upgrade the profile though third party resources for free, write your own blog content, add groups, exchange ideas, debate various topics in their forums and add an unlimited number of virtual friends.
Myspace has a policy that you cannot use their site to make money. That means no affiliate links or blatant advertisements for products and services. The site is free to use and they dont want your profile to be a sales page for something else. You want to use your page for name recognition, exposure and lead your friends via blogs and bulletins to your sites without violating any of Myspaces Terms of Service. However, you can still expose your information to hundreds or even thousands of people without turning your profile into a commercial sales page.
Remember, everyone who knows who you are is a potential client or customer. So, its not unusual to see writers, song writers, bands and artists promoting their names on Myspace via a simple "profile page."
What to do
First, create a profile, add some information, some pictures and dont worry much about what it looks like at first. Second, take advantage of free resources such as a third-party profile enhancement site. If you can cut and paste, you can easily enhance your profile and add features to it. There are literally dozens of sites like this to help you improve your profile. Grab free backgrounds, layouts, scripts, music and video codes, graphics and code tweaks to turn your profile into an exciting, appealing design. The only cost is a few minutes of your time copying and pasting code where you want your profile enhancements to appear.
Ideal Profiles
Your profile should offer useful content and it should stand out. Attempt to make bold statements that set you apart either by a) entertaining your visitors or b) providing them with useful or creative content, making your profile more "sticky." Remember, there are currently nearly 60 Million profiles on Myspace.com so yours can be easily lost in the gigantic see of profiles unless you do something different that prompts people to say, hey, I want to know more about this person and read more about you and what you have to say. You will also want them to come back often to see whats new with you.
When I say know more about you, I dont mean the address and name of the business your work for, your social security number, how many kids you have, their ages, their pictures and where they go to school. I mean generic yet useful information.
Browse a few profiles and you pay attention to the ones that clearly stand out more. But wait! Dont be too conservative with your creativity. If youre used to seeing boring business pages online, Myspace.com will surprise you. In there, you will find the good, the bad and the ugly.
Their network of millions of profiles is like a gigantic artist canvas where users give wings to their creativity, many not even paying attention to slow Internet connections by filling their profiles with graphics, music and even videos. So, if youre running a 56K modem, wait to take full advantage of Myspace.com after you upgrade to DLS or Cable, at least. Avoid slow-modem connection blues.
Negative publicity
Dont really worry about all the stuff you see on TV or read about. I am referring to the predator stories and even murders. Any online social network environment is subject to attracting bad elements of society. However, if you have kids between 14-17 years of age, be sure to know what theyre doing and how they are projecting and expressing themselves online. For their own safety, teach them not to post any personal information online that could lead the wrong person to start any form of inappropriate or even illegal solicitation or relationship with them.
Safety comes first when it comes to the Internet whether youre on Myspace.com or some other social network. There is no need for strangers to know details about your life, where you work, go to school, your telephone number, home address, etc. All the negative publicity about Myspace.com, in this authors opinion, has only contributed to more people joining the free service.
What NOT to do
If you are over 18 years of age and use Myspace.com, please do not use their service to arrange meetings with minors or you will likely find yourself in hot water and possibly arrested and, if you happen to be a minor, do not contact adults whom you do not personally know and strike up inappropriate conversations or exchanges. Stick with people of your own age group. Keep everything legal and avoid anything of a sexual nature, especially with minors. Do not use abusive language towards others in the forums, do not spam or upload violent or nude pictures to their system. You will eventually get banned or potentially find yourself in legal trouble. Always abide by their Terms of Service and dont do anything that breaks either local or federal laws. There is NO way to hide or be anonymous behind a computer. People with bad intentions or with criminal motives will eventually get caught.
Conclusion
Get a profile and add good content to it. Improve your profile. Add as many friends as you possibly can for greater exposure. If you have 1,000 friends, you can send a bulletin to ALL of them. Some people have over 150,000+ friends! Create your own group and invite your new friends to join it. For example, if you run a home-based business, you could create a public or private group to discuss issues related to working at home, for example. Besides having a growing number of "friends" you can communicate with via bulletins, forums, groups, messaging or chat, you will want them to end up on your website where you have other information that might be of interest to them.

This is a really awesome and informative article. I love that it talks about safety measures. The idea that MySpace can be used as exposure is a very good one. It's a great idea to use a MySpace profile for exposure without violating the TOS. Respond to this comment
