There are two mains types of home security alarm system, hard wired and wireless. So which is the best one? Both have their pros and cons and it is up to you to decide which one is best for you.
For home security systems, there is a choice of two types, hard wired and wireless so choosing the best home security system for your requirements requires some basic understanding of each system.
Hard wired security alarm systems are what you might think of as the traditional alarm system. This type of alarm system has been available for many, many years so these kinds of system are tried, tested and proven. As these systems are installed by hard wiring the various components of the system together, reliability is usually better than that of the equivalent wireless system as there are no issues related to the wireless signals to contend with.
A hard wired burglar alarm is generally considered a more professional installation and will add value to your property. After all, it's the kind of installation you would find in banks, shops, retail outlets, bars and office buildings. However, for the homeowner there is one major drawback. A hard wired alarm system really does have to be installed by a professional alarm installation company – and this comes at an expense. Not only are you paying for the services of a professional installer, but there will be costs for materials too, e.g. cabling, conduit etc… One other downside is that you cannot easily uninstall your home alarm system if you move house, it will have to be left behind. This could be a concern for people in rented accommodation.
As most homeowners are struggling to pay the bills and put food on the table they have not really got spare money for an expensive hard wired alarm installation. So is there a cheaper alternative? Wireless security alarms are great compromise on installation, functionality, ease of use, expandability and reliability.
Wireless burglar alarm systems can easily be installed by the DIY'er, thus reducing installation costs considerably. Wireless systems are nowhere near as expensive as they were a few years ago and reliability has improved significantly to the point where they are considered virtually as reliable as a hard wired alarm system. If you are planning on extending you property then adding additional security sensors is very easy compared to a hard wired system. No need to call out the alarm installer again. Just simply screw the sensor to the wall, door or window and add it to the control panel so that it recognizes it as a new sensor. The only main downside is that as the wireless sensors run on batteries, you will have to replace them regularly. There is often a self test on the control panel that notifies if a battery needs changing on any of the devices.
The great advantage of a wireless alarm system is that it can be uninstalled and taken with you if you move house. This is great for those in rented property who do not wish to leave behind their alarm system.
So there are pros and cons for both types of alarm system and choosing the best security system for you is a matter of personal preference together with what budget you have available. Always buy the best security system you can afford and don't forget to add on monthly monitoring fees if you require 24 hour alarm monitoring.
