The great thing about Houston is that there are so many day trips for families to enjoy some time away without breaking their budget.

Brenham is one of those places that your family is sure to enjoy. There are a multitude of activities to excite the youngest to the oldest.

Brenham is located halfway between Houston and Austin on HWY 290 in Washington County. It has several family oriented activities for every budget. As a parent, I like it because it is not a long ride and provides a ton of fun for a small price. Here are some must do activities in Brenham.

Blue Bell Creamery
Living in Texas, Blue Bell is our favorite ice cream so a tour sounded like an awesome idea. The tours last 45 minutes and your family will get to learn how the ice cream is made and packaged. The best part is the free scoop at the end of the tour. The tour is very reasonably priced at $3 for adults and $2 for children six to 12.

Miniature Horses
Another fun activity to do as a family is to visit the local monastery. The Monastery of St. Clare is only open from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays through Saturdays. It is important to take note of this because I have had several friends complain that it was closed when visiting. The horse farm has around 60 horses, a picnic area, gift barn and chapel for public use. Admission is only $4 for adults and $2 for children ages three to 12. This is a fun getaway to renew as a family. You are allowed to bring your own food which is very economical, but you can not share with the horses.

Take Pictures
Every year our family visits Washington County to take pictures sitting in the bluebonnets. The bluebonnet is the Texas state flower and makes a great portrait setting. Visitors can pull over on the side of the road or visit the visitor center online for a map of bluebonnet trails.

The Jersey Barnyard
This coincides with your Blue Bell trip. You can go and meet the infamous "Belle" from the ice cream commercials. Families can tour the working dairy farm and milk a cow, visit a hands-on petting zoo, go on hayrides and have fun in the hay mazes. This costs a little more compared to the others, but the opportunities are endless including feeding a baby calf a baby bottle. Cost is $7 for adults and $6.50 for children.

Horseshoe Junction Family Fun Park
Those who love go-karts, bumper boats and mini-golf will love this place. It also has laser tag and an arcade. What more family entertainment can you want?

Washington on the Brazos
This state park offers everything from camping fun to educational history. The park has two museums including the historical place where Texas signed its own constitution when it decided to become its own country. This is probably the most valuable stop to impart some historical knowledge on your kids.

As you can tell, there is enough to do in Brenham for more than one day. Start planning now what you want to take in and maybe plan more then one trip in a year. Or you can check out the camping scene to keep it an affordable family getaway.
