W icker furniture is one of the oldest and most popular forms of furniture, and comes in thousands of styles, shapes, and colors. As a result, choosing the right kind of wicker furniture can be a very difficult task for the novice and even more experienced home decorator. There are lots of choices which can be overwhelming. By keeping a few key points in mind, however, the decision can be made much easier.

The first point to consider when buying wicker furniture is what part of the house you plan to use it. Because of its distinctive look and natural coloring, wicker is most commonly used outdoors, or in well lit, airy rooms. Sunrooms, porches, decks, patios, and pools are all great places for a wicker piece or set. While wicker can also work in more interior spaces, it generally looks best in settings that convey a relaxed, entertaining mood.

Wicker furniture is amongst the most comfortable forms of outdoor furniture, it won't match up to the long-term comfort of plush furniture. Wicker is thus best used in places where people won't be sitting or lounging for hours on end. While it won't substitute for the living room sofa, a wicker love seat or divan can be a great addition to the sunroom. Focus on using wicker pieces in areas where people will sit and chat, eat, or enjoy the scenery.

Another factor to keep in mind is durability. Because wicker furniture is less durable than traditional wood and cushion furniture, it is best used in areas where it won't be exposed to weather, children, or pets on a regular basis. Furniture covers can help provide protection against the elements for wicker outdoor furniture. Resin wicker furniture can provide a more durable alternative to traditional wicker, but is best used exclusively outdoors.

Part of wicker furniture's great appeal comes from its relative low cost. Sets of wicker furniture cost a fraction of more traditional pieces, and can provide a much better value for the dollar if used and maintained properly. This is great advantage, as wicker tends to look best in sets, where it is the only type of furniture used in a room. Pairing wicker with tradition wood furniture can sometimes make the wicker pieces look tacky or shabby and are best avoided.

If you're trying to evoke a certain theme, wicker can be particularly effective. While not grandiose or imposing, wicker can evoke a charming, relaxed, and inviting atmosphere. Combining wicker pieces with paisley cushions or with lighter, neutral colors like beige, sky blue, or off-white can have an outstanding effect on the right type of space. If you're looking to decorate a den, living room, or office area, you might be better off choosing a different type of furniture.

When choosing your wicker furniture, always keep questions of where, who, and how it's going to be used in mind. If you have the right kind of space, and are aiming for a relaxed yet classy feel, wicker furniture is an excellent choice.

Wicker furniture was invented 4000 years ago in China using bamboo. Great article. Well done.
