Many traditional nurses have branched out into the forensic nursing field. This can either come from necessity or the fact that many saw a need for this type of specialised nurse. Many people may still think that forensics strictly deals with death and dead bodies. That may still be partially true. The flip side of evidence collection from a deceased body is evidence collection from a living one. This is where a forensics nurse comes into play. These specially trained nurses talk to the victims and the suspects and collect evidence from skin, clothing, and any DNA samples that they can legally obtain.

Forensics in and of itself deals with the legal system, the police, and the people who collect and test the evidence. Most any nurse who wants to can take one of many forensic nursing courses that are offered at schools, hospitals and training programs given by forensic nurses themselves. These courses given by a forensics nurse to other nurses who want to take the course are just to become a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. Once a nurse is verified in this training program and has a certificate they can work for themselves to help victims of this type of crime.

Many Nursing schools and colleges offer forensic nursing courses where a nurse can take the classes in their own time either at a school, or online. Some nurses who have branched out into the Forensic Nursing field work closely with hospitals to help and counsel victims who have been attacked. They collect samples of evidence that might normally have been washed or wiped away. This waste of valuable evidence ultimately cost the victims and taxpayers lots of money.

Evidence collection and preservation of that evidence is only one such course that a forensic nurse can take. These nurses also can counsel the families and the victims after their attack. They are often referred to programs and support groups. These programs are there for the victims after their wounds have healed. Forensic nurses have also sought to tackle school shootings and students who would bring guns and other weapons to school. Sometimes just their intervention may stop a child from hurting someone else.

Seeking further training and knowledge is something that every nurse often does to stay current and on top of new techniques. Forensic nursing is by far no different.
