Hello and welcome to Part three on how to clean your Toshiba Laptop

To recap on both parts we discussed how your Toshiba laptop becomes contaminated and what forms of contamination there are and how it degrades your system.

In this part I'm going to talk about various cleaning methods that you can do to quickly and easily to maintain your laptop and keep it clean and free of contamination.

I have broken down the exercise in various parts

Equipment required;

  • A Good quality natural brush preferably horse hair (not nylon based or man made)
  • Good quality lint free cotton muslin roll
  • Furniture polish that has a high viscosity
  • Foam cleaner
  • Fine Machine oil
  • Small can of lighter fluid (highly refined petrol)
  • White board cleaner (school writing board easel cleaner)
  • Small can of Paraffin (for more stubborn stains)or car upholstery cleaner concentrate paraffin based not premix.
  • Homemade water based cleaning solution 5% washing up liquid and 25% floor cleaner 70% clean water (can be made stronger but avoid excessive soapiness)
  • Small can pressurized air (air duster)
  • RPL electronic flux cleaner.

You will only use five of the above in most applications being

  • 2" horse hair brush
  • Furniture polish
  • Small can of lighter fluid (highly refined petrol)
  • Small can pressurized air (air duster)
  • Good quality lint free cotton muslin roll

The rest of the cleaning equipment can be acquired later and their uses will be explained in the advanced section.

    Top Lid

When cleaning your lid close the lid completely and place your Toshiba laptop flat on a table.

Non water based - Removing sticky substances, small self adhesive labels, ink pens, and very light scuffs.

Use lighter fluid either applied directly onto the surface or onto a cloth and sparingly, this liquid has no viscosity so it will run rapidly, avoid running if possible and use a muslin cotton cloth that is fluff free or lint free, wipe away effected area quickly until residue has been cleaned Note that when using lighter fluid on a totally black lid test on the underside of the machine first and verify a light whitening effect during drying, if overly white do not apply. If overly white use a paraffin solution mixed 75% paraffin 25% water. Pink or red paraffin is best and purer, do not be tempted to use "white spirit" on any plastic lid. Follow up with Furniture polish and scrub lightly until "polished" dry. NB never EVER use any kind of rubbing pad, abrasive, or polishing blocks on your laptop lid scoring will occur and it will impair the appearance of your laptop. For owners of Toshiba Laptops that have coloured tops i.e Gold, Deep Blue, Silver and Red, use petrol sparing and only just to remove the residue you cloth will pick up some of the lid colouring this is acceptable but don't rub the colour off, the coloured dye is very slightly dissolved on contact with refined petrol, as a rule do not over rub or over apply petrol. Black and Silver tops are most resilient.

Water based stains, pens, pencil marks very light scuffs.

Apply furniture polish and wipe away until polished dry with your muslin lint free cloth. For heavier water based stains such as felt pens use your 25/75% home made cleaning solution. Whiteboard cleaner can also be used but be quick and wipe away completely dry.

    Screens

For best results open your screen all the way back until flat, if you own a Toshiba laptop that only goes back to a predetermined angle then push it to that position.

It is absolutely essential that you treat your screen with care, when using your lint free cloth apply only light swift polishing movements across and up and down each vertical side of the screen, avoid a swirling action as this is not the correct cleaning action. Hold the screen and support it only from the lid side when polishing and do not twist the screen or torsion the screen at any time.Do not apply hard pressure in any one part of the screen, if you have a stubborn dirty area study the area carefully to establish whether its water based or spirit based. And use the correct cleaning solution. Its better to go over the effected area repeatedly but lightly applying pressure than trying to do it in one go!

Sneeze "marks" general dust, finger marks and some ink pens, dirty water based stains, and dried dirt, light food deposits.

Furniture polish achieves very good results, spray lightly over the entire area of the screen, a light mist is preferable, not a heavy coating, polish quickly and apply light pressure until the screen is polished using a cotton muslin lint free cloth, or equivalent. Fold cloth into quarters so that its slightly larger in width than you hand, change to the dryer sides of the cloth until you obtain a flawless clean surface with no marks or otherwise on the screen. If done correctly you will see a visible sheen on your screen. Never EVER use water based soluble solutions applied directly to the screen it will run very quickly into the diffuser area behind the screen and will dry and stain your screen when back lit. Apply directly into a cloth in small amounts and clean at right angles across and down depending on the size of the area affected. Apply furniture polish and then clean as above.

Non Water based Sticky substances, heavy greasy finger marks, spirit based pen marks.

White board cleaner applied to the cloth FIRST, and then cleaned in a right angled motion. More effective is lighter fluid applied directly to the cloth first and then applied to the effected area. Wait until dry and inspect, then if all is well apply furniture polish as described above.

That's it for now, and thank you for reading this far!

In part four I will continue onto the palm rest area and the rest of the machine

    Until then...
