Having a superior home theater system with Hi-Def picture and professional sound quality is something many individuals aspire to possess. Many people find the picture and sound fails to meet their high expectations after purchasing the latest Hi-Def TV, DVD player, and speakers. This is due to the fact that they have forgotten one small but vital aspect to a superior home theater system, the home theater cables.

Without having the cables to connect each component your home theater system is unfinished. Most home theater electronics are equipped with free cables that let you connect your system and get it working. But, these cables are generally low in quality and are worth what they cost, zilch. If you upgrade to a high quality home theater, you will need the best cables to provide the best experience in sound.

Once you have figured out which type of cables you require for the installation of your theater, you need to select which cables are optimal for your system. It is mind boggling with the huge variety of brands and quality cables possible to purchase. Your selection can make all the difference in your home theater picture and sound experience. Shorter cables will give you the best sound with minimal distortion.

Low resolution signals like NTSC do not need thick wires when you have video cables, which make them fairly inexpensive. On the other side of the coin, a high resolution HDMI cable can cost hundreds of dollars, but will deliver a premier quality picture. Numerous mid range cables offer decent quality and are cost effective. High definition signals should only be run over short lengths with the largest possible cables, just like sound cables.

Spending 5-10% of your home theater budget on cables is a good rule of thumb to adhere to. You should always test the cables in person at the retail store prior to buying, to be sure that they are of good quality. Several brand and quality levels do perform better than others, yet not each one is worth the additional cost, so select your cables intelligently.
