Mommy.  What a wonderful word.  I never thought I would get to have that word define me, but it does.  In the dictionary, under the word 'mom', my picture can now be included with the many other women out there who have had a child.

I have always wanted to be a mommy.  I was mommy when playing house with my sister and when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, my answer was "a stay at home mommy".  This becoming a reality was just assumed; you grow up, go to college, get married and have kids.  That is what is "taught" to you growing up, at least for little girls, so I didn't think it would be any different for me.

My husband and I decided we wanted to be married for a couple years before trying to have children.  About 4 years after that time passed, we saught medical help.  March of 2008 we were told we wouldn't be able to get pregnant on our own, so we had a Dye test done and an Intrauterine Insemination procedure scheduled for September 2008.

May 2008, I was late and kept telling God that we both knew I wasn't pregnant, so enough already.  My best friend told me the sure way to start was to take a pregnancy test, so I bought a 3 pack knowing I would need the other two in the future.  Boy did I have a surprise when I saw the results!!  There, in the little window, was a plus sign!!!  I was speechless!!!  I looked for the camera and couldn't find it, so I grabbed the video recorder and taped it!!!  My husband and I went to the doctor that morning and confirmed we were really going to have a baby!!

My pregnancy went by rather quickly and I was upset because I didn't think I had the belly you get with pregnancy.  I mean, come on, that is why you get pregnant right?  So people can look at you and see that growing belly and think, "Awww, she is going to have a baby!!"  While people around me assurred me it was growing, I didn't believe them.

On Friday, January 9th I started having a little cramping, nothing major, but making us aware of what was possibly going on.  We started timing the cramping from 6-9 pm and being irregular, my mom called the hospital to see if we needed to come in.  The nurse said to drink a large glass of water and lay on my left side, if the contractions got more intense and/or closer together, we could come in.  Around 11pm, I got up to go to the bathroom and heard and felt a "pop", followed by a warm liquid streaming down my legs.  I stood there a minute, then ran to the bathroom saying, "my water broke"!!!  That is when the contractions came with a vengence!!!  My front and back hurt and by the time we got to the hospital and up in a room, my contractions were about 5 seconds apart!!!  Just before I got my epidural, I was 8 centimeters dialated thinking, "Crap, they aren't going to give it to me because I'm so far along!!!"  After getting a low dose and pushing for about an hour, our little miracle was crying loudly and peeing on the nurses.  On January 10th, 2009 at 2:08 am, I was a mommy.  It finally happened.

It has been 4 months now since our little boy was born and I'm so thankful every day that he is here.  I can't imagine life without him and have this love for him that I still cannot comprehend.  I am finally the definition I always wanted to be.
