One of the most difficult factors to determine is whether your relationship has what it takes to stand the test of time. With divorce rates at an all time high, it's no wonder that people everywhere are worried that they might be investing their time, energy, and emotions in a relationship that is doomed to failure. Unfortunately, there are no absolute predictors as to whether or not your relationship will endure the long haul. However, with a little bit of observation, you can recognize signs that will give you a good idea as to the type of staying power your relationship does have.

First, it's important to accept the fact that the hot passion experienced with first love subsides. In fact, researchers have shown that the "in love" stage of a relationship only lasts for approximately two years. A good way to determine how much lasting potential your relationship has is to observe your partners affection level after the two year period. If you have reached the two year stage and find that the romance is drawing thin, yet your partner is still deeply committed to you, then there is a good chance that your relationship is built upon qualities that will stand the test of time.

Accepting the fact that the passion will fade is a clue as to how your relationship will fare. If your partner seems to be devoted to you whether you are enjoying a candlelit dinner or romantic walk on the beach, or staying home watching television, then there's a great chance you have the real deal. However, there is one factor that might be the best determining factor as to the longevity of your relationship, and that is how you and your partner communicate.

Communication is key to the success of any relationship. If you and your partner have a great love life, or have wonderful romance, but lack communication, then there is trouble undoubtedly lurking in your future. Remember that it is only natural for the romance to wear off and the passion to subside. When that happens, you must have other things in common that will keep you and your partner on a united front. Determining how you and your partner handle arguments will also give you a clue as to how you will deal with future issues as they arise.

If you and your partner don't have good communication, then you should begin working on those issues right away. Some people have poor communication skills and lack the ability to discuss issues and work things out in a healthy manner. For those who have difficulty in this area, the added pressure of stress that can come with a long term relationship can be devastating. If you and your partner cannot discuss issues, problems, or resolve conflicts in a calm and effective manner, then it is highly doubtful your relationship has long term potential. There is no shame with getting help from a relationship counselor, especially if that help will enable you to have a lasting relationship,
