Writing is such a great higher lever thinking skill that really keeps the brain working and focused. It is important for kids to keep their brains active during summer vacation. One easy way to do this is through writing.
At all age levels, writing can be such an instrument of student success. How do we as parents keep our kids interested in writing during summer vacation when they would rather be playing? Simple, make writing fun. Here are a few activities to excite your kids about writing and keep them working all summer long.
Buy them a journal
Kids love the thought of having their own journals. They have them in all different syles these days. Let your kids pick out their very own journal to use along with some fun pens or pencils. Then allot time each day as "Journal Time." Turn on some music and let them just write. If your kids have a hard time getting started, give them topics to begin with such as "when I grow up, I want to" or "my favorite part of my day is?"
Get the kids involved in shopping
Have your kids make your grocery lists every week. They will learn how to organize items as well as take a more active role in the family. You can even have them walk around with a clipboard finding what is missing in the kitchen that you might need.
Write letters
Have your children write letters to grandparents or friends informing them of summer activities. They will enjoy getting to go mail their letter.
Movie Reviews
Take your children out to a summer movie and then ask them to write a review of the movie. They will love getting to pretend like they are reporters as well as seeing some of the hot movies out right now.
Let them write the menu
Have your children invent the menu for the night and write it on a dry erase board or chalk board. They can even draw pictures to go with their descriptions of the foods.
Check out online
There are several great websites available that offer writing prompts and the chance for kids to be published. Tikatok.com is a great site. Also, check out your child's favorite author. Many times they have their own website.
Find inspiration
Take your kids out in nature at the lake or local park to find inspiration. Be sure to bring a journal or book to write on about their adventures.
