Cribbage is a great game to play and many people make mistakes in it just because they are not thinking about what to avoid. Here are 4 things you should avoid doing in cribbage.
1. Don't Open with a 5
Opening with a 5 is a great way to help give your opponent a few extra points. Remember if someone gets to 15 they get 2 points. The odds of your opponent having at least 1 card worth 10 points to get that 15 is too great considering there are a lot of 10 point cards.
I don't believe it is necessarily a bad thing to put down a 10 as the first card because the odds of them having a 5 are the same as the odds of them having a 6 if you put down a 9 or a 7 if you put down an 8, just don't open with a 5.
2. Don't make a streak of 2
If your opponent puts down a 5 don't put down a 6. If you do they can easily put down a 7 and score points for making a sequence of 3. If you do this you might be falling into a trap that the other player has set for you.
Of course if you have say the 8 it might not be a bad idea to put the 6 down. This way they could put down a 7 and score for having 5,6,7 and you could put down your 8 and score more points for making 5,6,7,8. It can actually help you trap them in some ways.
3. Don't play the same suit
Similar to streaks you score points when you get 3 of the same colors in a row, so don't give your competition a chance. If they put down a heart don't play another heart unless you have 1 or more hearts in your hand.
4. Don't Throw away low cards early
You want to keep your low cards for the end. This way you can score points for placing down the last card.
