Have you heard about a travel GPS system? If you like hiking trips to the mountains and into the woods, then it might be something for you. You've probably heard stories about campers, mountain climbers or hikers that have been lost on their trips. This could probably have been avoided if these people had hiking GPS units with them. There are plenty of sites on the internet reviewing travel or hiking GPS, showing each models specific features and benefits.

Before you purchase a GPS unit you should figure out what kind of GPS you need for your outback activities.

The first thing to find out is whether the GPS unit's map covers your travel area. If it doesn't, it's useless. Some of the travel or hiking GPS systems have different maps as a downloadable feature. Among these, some are offering downloads of topographical maps; which is very good to have in rugged wilderness. The simple models only give you basic information, like for example longitude and latitude and then it is up to you to read the map and find your precise location.

Weight and Seize

Look for a GPS system that is easy to bring on your trip, if it's too cumbersome it's useless. For these types of GPS, weight and size are the most critical features. What I recommend is that you purchase a hiking or travel GPS system with low weight and small enough size to have it on you during the entire trip. Whatever other functions it should contain is up to you.

Battery Life

The lifetime of the battery is also an important factor when choosing the right hiking GPS for your outdoor activities. If you are camping, using a R.V. or a generator and only like small hikes of an hour or two, the battery's life if not that important. However, if you are doing a mountain climb over several days, battery life is a critical issue. As a rule of thumb look for a GPS with battery life twice as long as you consider needed without charging. If you do everything will be fine. Although a long battery life is good, it has to be balanced with weight and size.

Other Features

Now it's time to figure out some other non-critical features that you like and find cool to have. It goes without saying that colored screens are easier to read than the simpler black & white ones. You can get hiking GPS systems that are able to track your path.  This makes it easy to know how far you have to go to reach your destination and last but not least to find your way back. You can also get travel GPS units with information on Sun/Moon cycles, hunting/fishing cycles, etc.  More and more other features are being added continuously.

Thousands of peoples' life have become a whole lot easier because of GPS Tracking Devices. Why don't you check out how the handy devices GPS systems can work, dependent of what you want to accomplish. Their prices might surprise you.
