Many drugs or medications, whether taken for treatment or taken for pleasure, can have an effect on the growth cycle of hair.

tetracyclines can slightly increase hair growth, but not enough to be worthwhile. This is an antibiotic used to fight bacterial infections.

Amphetamines may cause diffuse hair thinning by upsetting your metabolosm. Boric acid, which is used in mouthwashes, if used too often will cause thinning, as will boron.

Excessive intake of vitamin A can cause severe hair loss ,as well as some joint diseases. That is the reason most countries restrict the maximum concentration of vitamin A that can be bought without a prescription.

Nicotine from cigarettes and marajuana, will cause hair loss, also cause grey hair to turn yellow. excessive alcohol intake will cause hair loss by lowering vitamin levels. A build up of toxic minerals, such as, lead, cadmium, arsenic, boron, barium, mercury and silver will lead to hair loss.

some drugs and minerals also cause grey and blonde hair to turn green or yellow, one example is copper salts used in swimming pools.

Some drugs applied to the surface of the skin can cause a change in hair color, examples of this are; Dithranol, a treatment for psaoriasis, and Minoxidil.

Good nutrition is obviously beneficial to the body, skin and hair. Excessive dieting or fasting is dangerous, and often causes diffuse hair loss. It upsets the body's metabolism.

Occassionally, Chronic localized inflammation or infections may cause hair loss. Examples are urinary infections, impacted or infected wisdom teeth, gum infections, tooth abscess,, and chronic eye disorders.

Iron deficiency anemia causes hair to become dry and brittle, and it will break off.

Depression is another cause of hair loss. Trauma to the scalp can also cause hair loss.

Diffuse hair loss is the gradual thinning of hair from all parts of the scalp. The normal growth pattern is disturbed, and when the old hair falls out is isn't replaced with a new one.

Factors that contribute to diffuse hair loss are: Following pregancy Hormone imbalance Drugs and radiation Nutritional disorders Physical stress Emotional stress Accident or surgery Fevers Iron deficiency Depression Trauma

Approximatel 80 t0 100 hairs are shed per day, this is natural, and they don't leave bald spots. When hair thins, and you can see the scalp through the hair, this is abnormal hair loss, and a professional should be consulted.
