As every geek within a 50 foot radius knows, today was the day that Apple announced its latest innovations. Despite rumors, there was no Steve Job in sight. However, the news was just as exciting!

The result: Genius. I am not one to use that word loosely, but a minute into the new iPhone presentation, it is obvious the people at Apple are geniuses.

What is so special about the new iPhone? Different people are going to be impressed with different things, but the top new features I founds are as follows.

Video Camera

Only Apple would put a video camera of this magnitude in a hand held phone. iPhone users can now video an event, edit it right on the phone and then upload or email. YouTube better be ready with an influx of videos coming at them! The editing is so dummyfied even I can do it!

Better camera

Lets admit it. The worse part about the old iPhone was the camera. It hardly ever focused and you could not text pictures to other phone users. You could email, but texting was out of the question. Apple has now made it possible to take better pictures through steady hand control and the ability to focus. In fact, you just tap the screen where you want the phone to focus. You can now focus up close or far away. Then you can email, upload or text immediately.

Voice activated

My favorite part of Night Rider as a kid was the voice control. Now I get to be David Hasselhof. By voice command, I can have my phone call someone in my address book, call the number I tell it to or even play the song I want. Then Apple took it one step farther and will let me order the phone to play songs similar to the song I like through the genius playlist all by voice command.

Voice recorder

I would have died for this feature in college or even when I was a reporter. All those so-called off the record conversations would be recorded. With a tap of the button, the iPhone now records class lectures, conversations, etc.

Copy and Paste

This was probably the most complained about missing feature on the iPhone. Not any more. Microsoft could stand to learn from Apple. When users complain, Apple fixes the issues. Now users can copy by tapping and highlighting. They can copy emails or text messages then pasting in other applications. It is now a cross application tool.

Compass and Map

This was another issue with the old iPhone. You could never tell which way you were actually going on the map. You would move and see the roads, but you never know if you were going north, south, east or west on the road. Now the iPhone has a compass app that tells you which way you are going. Not only that the map will readjust to show you as well.

Battery

Another long complaint about the iPhone was the short battery life. No longer is that an issue. You can now listen to songs longer, play music or games longer, etc.

The cost for the iPhones stayed the same. It is $199 for the 16 gig or $299 for 32 gig with new service. The 32 gig is a new phone. Apple has never offered one that big before. Those with the old iPhone can update their software to get the copy, paste free but that of course does not come with all the new features.

Be sure to check out www.apple.com/iphone and check out the video of all the new features. Also, I am taking donations to buy my own so feel free to give to the Laura needs an iphone fund. HA!
