Part of my morning ritual involves a large group of feathered friends. While I'm having my latte and looking out the bay window in the kitchen, they show up to visit the feeders in the mountain ash tree or the birdbath in the garden. Some of them are regulars, some come and go with the seasons and some only visit briefly on their way to somewhere else.

I'm not exactly sure why the birds help set up my day for success. Partly it's because they connect me to nature and things that are basic. Partly it's because they remind me of my father who for many years diligently fed the birds in his own yard. Partly it's because it gives me a chance to just sit and be quiet before the hustle bustle of the day begins. Whatever the reasons, it always makes for a great start to the day.

How do you start your day?

Are you running around trying to do ten things at once?

Is there no time to connect with yourself and your loved ones?

Are you muttering and grumbling by the time you're heading out the door?

Do you catch yourself saying those dreaded words:
"It's going to be one of those days."

I can almost guarantee that if you start your day with a declaration about how bad it's going to be, you will most certainly have an unpleasant one. There's something in our nature that encourages us to prove ourselves right. So you go about your day collecting up all of the evidence of everything that goes sideways. Then when you come home you can recount to your family just how right your prediction was.

You get what you go looking for.

If your day starts in such a fashion that leaves you stressed, late, and frustrated, you carry that mindset with you when you head out the door. Your internal radar is automatically tuned to the negative. You tend to attract more of that as your day unfolds. You miss the opportunities that might be visible if you weren't so distracted.

What if your day began in a completely different way?

Imagine what would be possible if you took the time to ground yourself, set a positive intention and headed out looking for the best the day has to offer. You can't control most of what the day might bring to you. But you can control how you start it and what you think about it. How do I know for sure? A little bird told me.
